Aerial resources deployed to support ongoing Kloof Nek/Tafelberg Road fire suppression efforts

The South African National Parks (SANParks) Table Mountain National Park Fire Management Team continues to respond to the ongoing wildfire above Kloof Nek Corner and the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway following overnight firefighting operations.

Ground crews remained on the fireline throughout the night, monitoring and suppressing isolated hotspots. While conditions were favourable overnight due to lighter winds, potential flare-ups are anticipated for today as temperatures increase, particularly in steep cliff and rocky areas that remain difficult for ground crews to access.

To strengthen suppression efforts, Kishugu Aviation and AG Sprayers, contracted to SANParks, has deployed two Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) aircraft from AG Aviation from 08:00 this morning. The aircraft operation will focus on cooling hotspots identified through thermal imaging to reduce the risk of reignition. Additional rotor-wing aircraft may be deployed should operational conditions require.

Fresh firefighting crews have also been deployed to relieve overnight teams, with approximately 43 ground personnel and three water tankers currently assigned to the incident.

The public is reminded that aerial firefighting operations will be underway, and members of the public are urged to avoid the affected area and comply with trail closures along the Contour Path and surrounding trails to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, to ensure the safety of visitors, firefighting personnel and aviation resources.

SANParks will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as necessary.

This past Saturday, NCC-Group’s Integrated Wildfire Management (IWM) unit participated in the Overberg District Municipality’s International Firefighters’ Day event in Bredasdorp.

The unit attended with two crews to represent the group alongside our partners in the Overberg District. The day was an excellent showcase of the teamwork and physical endurance required to protect our landscapes.

Our team demonstrated their expertise across several friendly yet competitive challenges, including the Toughest Firefighter Alive challenge, 2,4km and 10km endurance runs, and a technical navigation 4x4 challenge.

Beyond the competition, the gathering offered a good opportunity to reinforce the synergy between ourselves and other provincial units, essential for a proactive response. Thank you to the Overberg District Municipality and all other partners involved for a day that we wont soon forget.

The NCC Wildland Firefighters front and centre!

Thank you for the lovely post on behalf of all the firefighters, Premier Alan Winde.

When the call comes, they respond. Every time. Today, we honour our firefighters.🚒👩‍🚒🧑‍🚒

To every woman and man who runs toward the flames so others can run to safety - thank you.

In the Western Cape, our firefighters know what it means to face some of the most challenging conditions in the country. From the slopes of Table Mountain to the fynbos of the Overberg, from the Winelands to the West Coast, they respond, they protect, and they never back down.

On this International Firefighters Day, we say thank you. Not just today, but for every shift, every callout, and every sacrifice made in service to our communities.💙
