What to Do After a Car, Truck or Motorcycle Accident
Helpful Tips If You are Involved in a Road Accident
We understand how upsetting accidents can be. If you are in a car, truck or motorcycle accident in South Africa, it is important to try to stay as calm as possible to help others in need and also to protect your rights when someone else is negligent.
At Le Roux Consulting, we have a few tips for people involved in accidents. We encourage you to print out this page and keep a copy in your glove box:
• Turn on your emergency lights.
• Help those injured by calling an ambulance. Don't try to move an injured person as this can aggravate the injury.
• Contact the police and tell them about any injuries or if anyone appears to be intoxicated.
• Gather information from other drivers, passengers, pedestrians or witnesses, including addresses and driver's license numbers, full names, insurance status of drivers, license plate numbers, make and model of cars, name of person to whom vehicle is registered and phone numbers.
• Write down details of the accident (time and date of the crash, how the accident happened, if anyone was intoxicated, direction of the vehicles, weather conditions, names and badge numbers of police officers who came to the scene, and any damage to the cars or trucks). If you don't have a pen or paper available, many cell phones have a memo function to take voice messages.
• Use a camera or your cell phone to take pictures of the crash scene, including damage to the cars, street signs, skid marks, and weather conditions.
• Make a diagram showing the direction the cars were travelling and where the impact occurred.
• Note if you saw any problems with the other vehicles that may have contributed to the crash, including bald tires or a broken headlight.
• Don't discuss the accident with any other drivers or witness, or accept responsibility.
Over the years, we have listened to many heart-wrenching stories from our clients injured in car, truck and motorcycle accidents. We understand their frustration, which fuels our passion for pursuing justice.
