Umvoto, in collaboration with SADC-GMI, hosted a stakeholder workshop in January 2026 in Dar es Salaam for the project “Determining Groundwater Dependency and Vulnerability in Coastal Cities (Cape Town and Dar es Salaam)”. This was the second validation workshop for the project, following the first one, which was held in September 2025 for the Cape Town component of the project.

This part of the project aimed to develop a Conjunctive Management Strategic Action Plan for the Wami-Ruvu Basin Water Board to provide a framework to guide sustainable groundwater use, mitigating identified risks and enhancing resilience in Dar es Salaam to climate change and environmental stresses.

The workshop provided an important platform to share project progress and gather stakeholder feedback on the proposed strategic action plans. Participants included representatives from SADC-GMI, the project team from Umvoto, WEMA, Hydrologic Consulting, the Freshwater Research Centre, along with members from academia, the GIZ, and Wami-Ruvu Basin Water Board.

Another project done and dusted! Umvoto was recently commissioned by the Southern African Development Community Groundwater Management Institute (SADC-GMI) to undertake a project on determining the dependency and vulnerability of groundwater in coastal cities, using Cape Town and Dar es Salaam as case studies.

Having concluded in February of 2026, the project aimed to improve the sustainable use and management of groundwater, to strengthen the resilience of these urban centres under changing environmental conditions.

At Umvoto, sustainability is not a side initiative; it is woven into how we operate every day. Our off-grid solar system keeps us powered by the sun, our waste is carefully separated and composted, and our living ecosystem pond demonstrates natural water balance in action. Even our office design reflects mindful resource use, from shared wash basins to water efficient systems. Together, these practices embody our belief that environmental stewardship begins at home and that sustainable design can be both practical and inspiring.
