31/01/2023
Believe it or not, we’re already completing the first month of 2023! This made me reflect on a typical January as a virtual assistant or anyone who freelances for that matter. If Cape Town, South Africa is anything to go by, the laid-back festive beachy vibe is slow to dissipate as workplaces and schools reluctantly start up again, leaving us freelancers in limbo while waiting for our clients to get back to full focus for the year. As a virtual assistant or freelancer, you will already know that incoming work is seldom a consistent stream, but rather a haphazard conundrum of feast or famine – and it’s no different in that first month of the year!
As a virtual assistant I’ve learnt to use my time productively, and when I find myself with ‘spare time’ in January here’s how I’ve learnt to put this time to good use:
• Go through all your ‘stuff’! I like to start my year by going through all my documents and emails, deleting, re-filing, archiving, etc. Clearing up and cleaning out always help start the new year with a feeling of having a ‘tidy cupboard’ – clearing out the not-needed, re-familiarising on information regarding clients that’s been forgotten along the way, and making notes/consolidating ideas for oneself to enable staying ‘on-top of things’ when work gets hectic. There’s nothing more work-inspiring than starting the new year with a clean slate of sorted documents and emails!
• Upskill or brush up on your existing skill set. There’s so much that you can learn online, even if it’s only small things on free platforms such as GCF Learnfree or YouTube, you’ll feel well prepared for the new year challenges when you have that extra knowledge crowding in those brain cells! And if you’ve been wanting to get around to a longer, more intense course – now’s a good time to research courses to be completed during the year.
• Update all your online profiles – LinkedIn, Facebook, website etc. It’s never a good idea to leave these exactly the same for years on end, and this will also go some way to connecting again with existing and possibly new, network clients.
• Job hunting: Virtual assistants and freelancers are, and should be continually, job seeking, even during busy months. January might not always be the best time to job search, but use the slow time to connect, network and research possible work avenues – you never know what the new year could bring!
Here’s to a happy, and productive 2023!
