🚿 Temporary Public Shower Relocation

Next Friday, the temporary public shower at Muizenberg Beach will be relocated to support the next phase of construction.

While the new location is closer to the road, it has been carefully selected to remain accessible for the rest of the project while allowing construction to continue without unnecessary delays. Protective barriers will be in place for public safety.

Keeping the project on track for its planned December 2026 completion is our priority, ensuring the community can enjoy the upgraded beachfront and its new public facilities as soon as possible.

📍 The temporary shower will be located next to the smaller traffic circle on Beach Road, near the eastern parking area.

🚧 Please take extra care around the construction site and follow all signage and barriers.

Thank you for your patience and support as we work together towards the completion of the Muizenberg Beachfront Refurbishment Project.

Don’t panic... they’ll be back! 😄

The final four iconic Muizenberg beach huts on the main promenade are being carefully dismantled to make way for the next phase of the beachfront upgrade.

The good news? The huts are coming back.

As part of the project:
✅ All eight huts will be replaced with new, more durable versions.
✅ They’ll keep the same iconic colours and historic design.
✅ They’ll be repositioned about 2 metres further inland to make space for the upgraded promenade and seawall, helping protect the beachfront from rising sea levels and future storm surges.

The removal of the final huts is a sign that construction is progressing well, with the project still on track to be completed by December 2026.

City to dismantle remainder of Muizenberg beach huts.

The City would like to advise residents and visitors that by next week, the contractor will start dismantling the four remaining beach huts on the eastern side of the Muizenberg beachfront. The refurbishment project is making steady progress and the work will soon move to this side of the beach. It is important to note that the iconic beach huts will be replaced with similar huts in keeping with the beachfront’s heritage and feel once the project has been completed.

Read more below:
The refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront entails replacing the aged seawalls and major upgrades to public amenities. The project commenced in February 2025, and all is on track to complete the works by December 2026.

The contractor has placed about 60% of the precast step and promenade units, which will provide coastal protection while also providing beach access at varied levels. Most of the steps will be below beach level and invisible to visitors as it will be buried under sand under normal conditions. The in-situ cast concrete work for the Surfer’s Corner section of the revetment is practically complete, and work on the parking area next to the railway line and the landward landscaping have commenced.

Beach huts
• By next week, the contractor will be dismantling and removing the four beach huts on the eastern side of the beachfront
• The four beach huts on the western side were removed in March already
• The eight removed huts will be replaced with eight new huts of improved quality for increased durability, while following the historic design and pattern arrangement as part of the upgrade project
• The existing huts need to be removed from their current location as the new upgraded promenade will be further inland – the setback is approximately 2m. The setback is needed in response to the impact of climate change, including rising sea levels and storm surges and also to ensure the new seawall does not reduce the width of the beach

‘I know our residents are very protective of Muizenberg’s iconic beach huts. This is why we want to communicate upfront about the fact that we will be dismantling the remaining four huts so that we can start with the work on the eastern side of the beachfront.
‘This is good news, because it indicates that the project is progressing well and that all remains on track to complete the work on time. I again want to thank our business community, our local community, the visitors and general public for your patience and support while we are upgrading this very popular beach destination. Your cooperation is much appreciated and makes it possible for us to work at a steady pace,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
The beach huts further down the coastline, closer to the river mouth, are not impacted and will remain in place.

🌿 Long before the new beachfront opens, something special is already taking root in Muizenberg's own backyard.

While the construction team is hard at work building the stepped revetment and promenade, these seedlings are quietly growing and getting ready to take their place in the new landscaped planters that will form part of the Muizenberg Beachfront Refurbishment.

Rather than introducing generic landscaping, the planting palette has been carefully designed using indigenous species that are endemic to the False Bay coastline. Propagated from the local False Bay gene pool, these plants are naturally adapted to Muizenberg's coastal conditions, including salty air, strong winds, and sandy soils.

Many of these plants are being nurtured at local nurseries, including Muizenberg's own FynbosLIFE (Cape Flats Fynbos) Nursery at Zandvlei. They are an NPO that strives for conservation education, with the intention to raise the profile of the rich natural heritage of the geographical region of the Cape Flats.

This is one of the many ways that the Project has been designed with both people and the environment in mind. 🌱💚

⚠️ Temporary Water Supply Interruption

Please be advised that there is currently no water supply to the Waves for Change building and the temporary public ablutions at Muizenberg Beachfront.

At this stage, the cause of the interruption is unknown. We can confirm that the contractor is not currently undertaking any construction activities in the vicinity of these buildings, and there is no indication at present that the outage is related to the refurbishment works.

A team is actively investigating the cause of the interruption and working to have the water supply reinstated as soon as possible.

We appreciate your patience and understanding, and will provide an update as soon as the cause has been identified and more information becomes available.

Thank you.
