Sometimes the best venues find you through people you already know.

A friend, Jordan Buckley, told us about Now Coffee in Umhlanga Ridge. We looked them up — and spotted an old mate, Garth Anderson in their Instagram feed. One phone call later we were talking to the owners, Pascal and Shaina-Rae Bauwens.

Pascal taught himself to roast coffee off YouTube and a couple of books. Five months in, he placed top ten at South Africa's national roasting competition. He's since won a final round outright and taken the April Brewers Cup. Before all that he did an honours degree in biokinetics and sailed across the Atlantic.

The coffee is exceptional. But it was the room at the back that caught our eye.

Eight seats, a screen, good WiFi — and months of booking enquiries handled by hand through a Gmail address, because Umhlanga needs more professional places to meet.
