🌍Earth Day 2026 | Advancing a just and resilient green economy

Today we reflect on a simple truth: the health of our planet is directly linked to the health of our people, economies, and future generations. At TOMA-Now, we continue to work within the evolving sustainability landscape in South Africa, where the green transition is already underway-but still needs to be more inclusive, practical, and just.

🌱 Key trends shaping the green transition:
• Renewable energy expansion is accelerating
• Climate-smart agriculture is growing in importance
• Circular economy solutions are reshaping waste management
• Green finance is increasingly supporting low-carbon development
• Ecological infrastructure is gaining recognition as essential for resilience

But challenges remain:
Energy insecurity, water scarcity, and climate variability continue to affect livelihoods and food systems-showing how interconnected our water, energy, and food systems really are.

💡 The real question is not whether we transition, but:
👉 How do we ensure the transition is fair, inclusive, and locally relevant?
🌍 Earth Day reminder: A sustainable future will not happen by chance-it must be intentionally designed, collaboratively built, and equitably shared.

Let’s keep building systems that sustain both people and the planet. 🌱💚

International Plant Appreciation Day

International Plant Appreciation Day is observed annually on 13 April and serves as an important reminder of the vital role that plants play in sustaining life on Earth. Beyond their beauty plants are essential to ecological balance, human survival, and socio-economic development.

Plants form the foundation of terrestrial ecosystems and through photosynthesis they produce oxygen, regulate carbon dioxide levels, and support climate stability. With an estimated 380 000 plant species globally, they sustain biodiversity by providing food, shelter, and habitat for countless animals and insects.

Plants are also central to human life and development with agriculture depending entirely on them therefore making them essential for food security and economic activity worldwide. From staple crops to horticultural produce plants support livelihoods, trade, and national economies including here in South Africa where agriculture plays a key role in rural development and exports.

In South Africa, organisations such as CapeNature and SANParks highlight the importance of planting indigenous species at the right time and in the right conditions particularly in biodiversity-rich regions such as the Western Cape which is home to globally significant ecosystems like the Cape Floral Region.

Despite their importance, plant biodiversity is under threat from climate change, habitat loss, deforestation, and unsustainable land use. This makes conservation and sustainable practices more important than ever.

At TOMA-Now, we encourage action through:
🌱 Supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
🌳 Promoting urban greening initiatives.
🌿 Conserving natural habitats.
📚 Investing in environmental education and awareness.

Small actions can contribute to long-term environmental resilience. Let us protect and appreciate the plants that sustain us all! 🌍💚

🌍 World Health Day 2026 |Together for Health. Stand with Science

On 7 April, the world comes together to recognise that health is more than healthcare - it’s shaped by the environment we live in, the food we grow, the air we breathe, and the systems we build. This year’s theme reminds us that science, collaboration, and long-term thinking are essential to tackling today’s complex health challenges.

At TOMA-Now, we see firsthand how climate, ecosystems, and public health are deeply connected. Building healthier communities means investing beyond hospitals - into the systems that sustain life.

What matters now:
🏥 Climate-resilient health systems
🌬️Clean water, healthy ecosystems & better air quality
🥗 Sustainable agriculture for food security & nutrition
🤝Equitable access to healthcare, especially in rural communities

🌿 Our contribution:
• Driving nature-based solutions with real health benefits
• Supporting evidence-based planning at landscape level
• Building partnerships that connect policy, practice & people

✔ Because healthier people need a healthier planet
✔ Because science must guide our decisions
✔ Because collaboration is the way forward

This World Health Day, let’s remember: Health is everyone’s responsibility.

International Zero Waste Day Starts on Our Plates

Every year on 30 March the world observes International Zero Waste Day – a reminder that how we produce, consume, and dispose of resources has far-reaching consequences. This year, the spotlight is on food waste which is one of the most pressing yet preventable environmental challenges of our time.

According to the Global Waste Management Outlook 2024, municipal solid waste was projected to rise from 2.1 billion tonnes in 2020 to 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050. Alarmingly, 810 million tonnes was improperly disposed in 2020, and without urgent action this could nearly double to 1.6 billion tonnes annually by 2050 which will worsen climate change, marine plastic pollution, and human health.

In South Africa, municipalities collect about 12.7 million tonnes of municipal waste each year, while 3.67 million tonnes remain uncollected. In 2022, the world wasted 1.05 billion tonnes of food which is nearly one-fifth of what is available to consumers was wasted, with South Africa contributing over 10 million tonnes.

This is more than just a waste of food it is a waste of water, energy, labour, and resources yet millions of people around the world continue to face food insecurity. The reality is clear: food waste is not just an environmental issue; it is an economic and social one. It threatens human health, places a heavy burden on economies, and accelerates the triple planetary crisis of climate change.

The good news is that solutions already exist and they start with all of us.

At TOMA-Now we encourage you to:
📝Plan meals ahead and shop with intention to avoid overbuying.
🍲Store food correctly and get creative with leftovers.
🌱 Support initiatives that redistribute surplus food to communities in need.
📢Be part of local campaigns that promote sustainable and waste reduction.

By taking small and intentional steps, we can collectively move towards a more sustainable circular future.

🌍 Global Recycling Day 2026
♻️ Turning Waste into Opportunity

What if waste was not waste at all, but value waiting to be unlocked?
Every year, Global Recycling Day reminds us that what we throw away still has a role to play. Recycling is more than an environmental action-it’s a driver of economic growth, job creation, and resource efficiency across entire value chains.

At TOMA-Now, we are not waiting for a circular economy-we’re actively building it. Here’s how:
🔄 Reimagining Plastic Systems: Supporting policy, regulation, and on-the-ground solutions to reduce plastic pollution and strengthen recycling systems.
📦 Driving EPR in South Africa: Helping businesses move beyond compliance to real impact-strengthening collection, recovery, and recycling value chains.
🔋 Powering the Battery Economy: As renewable energy and e-mobility grow, we’re helping stakeholders prepare for the future of battery waste and circular value chains.
🛠️ Extending Product Lifecycles: Repair, reuse, and refurbishment-because reducing waste starts long before recycling.

💡 Through our work, we support industries to:
♻️ Reduce material waste
⚡ Improve energy and resource efficiency
📈 Increase recovery and recycling rates

✨ These are not just sustainability actions - they’re smart, future-focused business strategies.
The shift to a circular economy is already underway.
The real question is: how fast can we scale it - and who will lead the change?

Happy International Day of Action for Rivers!

Did you know that over 77% of the world’s rivers no longer reach the ocean? Pollution, damming, and unsustainable water use are placing rivers at risk. Rivers are vital for ecosystems, agriculture, and the livelihoods of millions of people, yet many are disappearing at an alarming rate.

The International Day of Action for Rivers highlights the urgent need to protect freshwater systems. Healthy rivers support biodiversity, help regulate climate, and provide clean water for communities. Globally invasive plant species and unmanaged waste reduce river flow, degrade water quality, and disrupt habitats. These impacts often begin upstream, long before they reach downstream communities and ecosystems.

At TOMA-Now, we addressed these challenges in the Karatara River Catchment through a sustainable, community-driven solution. The project developed a business model for biomass products including biochar, activated carbon, and wood vinegar using alien invasive plants (AIPs) cleared from the catchment. The initiative focused on creating sustainable jobs for local communities supporting Small Medium and Micro Enterprises to promote entrepreneurship and evaluating costing models that balance government-supported clearing programs with product value.

We encourage everyone to take part in river stewardship:
🌱 Restore riverbanks and remove invasive species.
💧 Reduce pollution entering rivers from households and industry
⚡Support community-led innovation that links ecological protection with sustainable livelihoods.

Protecting rivers is not just an environmental responsibility — it’s a social and economic imperative. Every action counts in safeguarding these lifelines for people, wildlife, and future generations.
