Good day residents of Claremont,
Although we have just passed the 4th quarter, the CPF felt it important to share the crime statistics for the 4th quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year. The 4th quarter refers to the period after Christmas up until 31 March 2026, just before the start of the new financial year on 1 April 2026.
As a reminder, the Claremont precinct covers a very large area, including Bishops Court, Fernwood, parts of Newlands, parts of Kenilworth, Harfield, Lynfrae, Beca, Claremont Village, Kenilworth Village, Clare Park and the Claremont CBD. If any areas were unintentionally left out, we do apologise.
With that being said, the following crimes showed an increase during the 4th quarter compared to the same period 2024/2025. It is important to note that in some cases, an “increase” may literally mean only two or three additional incidents. Apart from these categories, crime has significantly decreased overall and continues to trend downward.
INCREASED CRIMES:
• Theft of Motor Vehicles – This increase is largely linked to scooters being stolen in the CBD area. We also experienced vehicle thefts in residential areas as well as along the M3/Newlands Forest area.
• Car Hijackings in Residential Areas – This was certainly not an increase anyone wanted to see or experience. Please remain vigilant at all times and never exit your vehicle for strangers or suspicious individuals.
• Sexual Assaults at Schools – Sadly, this category has also increased. The CPF, together with SAPS and any stakeholders willing to assist, are prepared to engage with schools and speak to learners and communities. Anyone wanting to get involved is welcome to reach out to us.
Our ongoing and persistent challenge remains THEFT OUT OF MOTOR VEHICLES. Take a walk around your vehicle today and look at it through the eyes of a criminal. Items that may seem worthless to us can still be valuable to someone looking for their next fix. Remember: “Boot it or lose it!”
Unfortunately, we do not live in a crime-free society, but what we can control is our attitude towards crime and our willingness to work together as a community.
If you live in Harfield, please reach out to Jen Rowe and support the installation of additional cameras in the area. This initiative will make a significant difference.
Join Harlyn Neighbourhood Watch — they continue to deter a substantial amount of crime in the area for Sector 1&4.
Join Community in Blue — these volunteers work across all sectors and assist in many successful operations.
Consider signing up with security companies such as Compass, Princeton and ADT for additional support and visibility in your neighbourhood.
With that being said, crime figures for the new financial year have already shown a decrease, and we would like to thank all role players, volunteers, SAPS members, CIDS, Neighbourhood watches, Law enforcement agencies and security partners for their outstanding work.
Keep going, together we are making a difference.
Carla Williams
