On 9 August 1956, a powerful wave of resilience and unity washed over South Africa as 20,000 bold and determined women embarked on a historic march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Their mission? To stand up against the oppressive pass laws that sought to diminish their dignity, freedom, and rights. These laws mandated that black South African women carry demeaning ID documents derogatorily labeled as “dompas”.

Guided by the unwavering spirit of leaders such as Mama Albertina Sisulu, Lilian Ngoyi, and Helen Joseph, these courageous women peacefully rallied together to challenge the status quo. With songs of freedom on their lips and banners held high proclaiming powerful messages like “Wathint’ Abafazi Wathint’” (You strike a woman, you strike a rock!), they epitomized the strength and fortitude of the women of South Africa.

The iconic march of 1956 stands as a monumental cornerstone in the tapestry of South African history, showcasing the transformative impact of peaceful protest in dismantling unjust laws and paving the way for a more equitable society.

Our journey at Micro-MBA is deeply intertwined with the legacy of Mama Albertina Sisulu, who graciously accepted the role of patron in 1991. Over the course of a decade, Mama Sisulu offered unwavering support, traversing the length and breadth of the country to attend Micro-MBA trainers’ courses. Her enduring belief in our mission, viewing Micro-MBA as a beacon of hope for the unemployed, resonated in her encouraging words that fueled our perseverance.

Today, on this momentous 9th of August, as South Africa commemorates Women’s Day to honor the bravery and tenacity of those indomitable women (a celebration observed globally in March), we pay tribute to the unwavering spirit that continues to inspire us. Unlike many political leaders today, Nelson Mandela was blessed with abundant emotional intelligence. In 1975, he wrote to his wife Winnie from Robben Island: “Honesty, sincerity, simplicity, humility, pure generosity, absence of vanity, readiness to serve others - qualities which are within easy reach of every soul - are the foundation of one’s spiritual life.”
In 1999, we were delighted when he wrote to us as quoted above.
