The Michaelis UCT graduate class will be hosting their annual Silent Auction student fundraiser - a superb opportunity to support them in their cause, and for collectors to purchase early-career works of young South African artists. Instead, prospective buyers place ‘silent’ anonymous bids on a bidding sheet, using a bidding number. This year, the bidding process will be set over three days, on 14
, 15 & 16 September. Artworks will be available for viewing in the week leading up to the event, and bidding will be open throughout the three-day window, until the event closes at midnight on September 16. This event is a longstanding tradition of the Michaelis School of Fine Art. It is a fundraiser aimed at covering the printing and production costs of the 4th-year student catalogue, as well as contributing to the Michaelis Materials Bursary. The Materials Bursary is an important fund which is open to all Fine Art students in need of financial assistance with regards to covering materials costs. By contributing to the Materials Bursary, and by funding a professionally produced catalogue, Michaelis graduates are using this opportunity to give back to the School, and to frame their work within a broader context of professional art practice. Both of these fundraising efforts are important elements in the development of socially connected, resourceful young artists. This year, the graduate class will be relying solely on the silent auction to raise at least R100 000 towards these important aims.
