At AMSOL, we work on, in and under the ocean. On World Oceans Day, we join global efforts to highlight the importance of protecting and conserving our marine environment.

We operate our vessels and conduct our marine operations with care and respect for the environment. In 2025, through proactive marine emergency response activities, we helped prevent approximately 35,000 tonnes of fuel from potentially entering the marine environment along the Southern African coastline.

Our operations are guided by strict compliance with maritime regulations and environmental legislation, with a strong focus on continuous improvement in environmental performance. We remain committed to operating responsibly and reducing our impact on the marine environment.

Bringing together the people who lead our operations every day, at sea and ashore.

This week, we are hosting our Officers Forum, bringing together Masters, Chief Engineers and Senior Officers from across the business to discuss key priorities, including safety, fleet health, operational performance, growth opportunities and our commercial outlook.

These forums provide a valuable opportunity for our seagoing and shore-based teams to connect, ensuring alignment on business priorities and creating space for meaningful discussion. By sharing insights, experiences and lessons learned, we strengthen our ability to address challenges, identify opportunities and drive continuous improvement across our operations.

AMSOL remains committed to promoting environmental awareness and the long-term sustainability of marine ecosystems. As part of this commitment, the company has maintained a multi-year partnership with the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) in Gqeberha to support environmental education and conservation initiatives.

AMSOL Communications Officer, Lizeka Mathabeni, recently participated in a lesson at the SANCCOB centre, where Mzomtsha Primary School learners took part in an interactive session on seabirds, biodiversity, pollution, climate change, and African penguin conservation, and explored the rehabilitation facility to learn more about marine conservation efforts.

Through these partnerships, AMSOL continues to support environmental education and equip young people with knowledge about protecting the oceans.

AMSOL’s AHTSV 'Nomasa' recently supported the installation of floating navigation buoys at the Port of Tanga in Tanzania. The operation commenced at the end of April and was safely and successfully completed this week. The project forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance navigational safety and support efficient, reliable maritime operations within the port.

AMSOL’s offshore marine services fleet which includes the versatile 'Nomasa', 'Umkhuseli', and 'Inkanyezi', provides coastwide coverage and delivers both offshore and in-port marine support across the region.

“Supportive colleagues create an environment where everyone feels valued, respected and able to grow.” – Saneliso Zincume, Third Engineer

As a Third Engineer at sea, Saneliso Zincume believes that teamwork, respect and communication are essential in building positive and professional working environments onboard. In the maritime industry, where crew members live and work together for extended periods, often under pressure, she highlights the important role colleagues play in shaping workplace culture. For her, supportive teams create spaces where people feel valued, regardless of gender, nationality or rank. Simple actions such as sharing knowledge, listening to one another’s ideas, working collaboratively during operations and maintaining mutual respect contribute significantly to a safer and more inclusive environment at sea.

Reflecting this year’s International Day for Women in Maritime theme, “From Policy to Practice,” Saneliso says that being treated as an equal professional builds confidence and encourages continuous growth within the industry. Looking ahead, she sees maritime excellence as an industry where opportunities are shaped by skill, professionalism and dedication, not gender. She believes greater representation of women across all departments and ranks will strengthen innovation, teamwork and problem-solving within vessel operations, while also encouraging more young women to pursue careers at sea with confidence and a sense of belonging.

“The key to career progression in the maritime industry is continuous learning, resilience and building a strong support network.” Shamaine Mamashela, Third Engineer

As an Engineer at sea, Shamaine reflects on a career shaped by determination, growth and a commitment to excellence in a traditionally male-dominated environment. For her, career progression has been driven by a deliberate focus on continuous learning and resilience in the face of long contracts, challenging conditions, and occasional setbacks. Early in her career, she actively sought mentorship and guidance, while pursuing opportunities that would strengthen her technical capability and professional development. She credits supportive seniors and mentors for reinforcing the importance of persistence, adaptability and excellence in opening doors within the maritime industry. Beyond technical growth, Shamaine highlights the importance of visibility and leadership, noting that consistently demonstrating competence and professionalism plays a key role in shaping how the industry evolves over time. She also emphasises that workplace culture onboard is shaped by everyday behaviours. Respect, clear communication, and active allyship are essential in creating environments where everyone feels safe, valued and heard. Addressing inappropriate behaviour promptly and constructively, while ensuring that all voices are heard during meetings and briefings, contributes to a more inclusive and professional culture at sea. For Shamaine, women also play an important role in leading by example through professionalism, competence and supporting others. She believes that when people feel respected and psychologically safe, they perform at their best, ultimately strengthening safety, wellbeing, teamwork and operational excellence at sea.
