It was an absolute pleasure for our team to hand over the 1st edition KAIZEN™ Institute South Africa Award (SADC region) to Vulcan Mozambique, in recognition of their Excellence in Applying KAIZEN™ Principles.

The handover to CEO Dr. Mukesh Kumar took place during an on-site ceremony attended by over 100 employees — true drivers of Vulcan’s culture of continuous improvement. Several senior managers addressed the audience, reinforcing the message that KAIZEN is a continuous journey and that this award adds even more energy and motivation for the road ahead. Their ongoing efforts continue to drive improvement not only in company performance, but also in Vulcan’s positive impact on the local community and environment.

Vulcan operates the Moatize Coal Mining Complex in Tete, Mozambique, spanning more than 300 km², as well as the 912 km railway connecting Moatize to Nacala Port. It was an honour for our team to visit their plants and mines, and to witness firsthand the impactful KAIZEN improvement projects that contributed to this recognition — projects that have significantly enhanced overall output and quality metrics.

This award aims to recognize superior KAIZEN™ and Lean organisations for their outstanding, innovative, and effective implementation of KAIZEN™ principles and practices. The evaluation process, conducted by senior consultants at applicants’ premises, assesses the robustness of the five KAIZEN™ principles, as well as the organisation’s benefits tracking systems — ensuring employees understand where the organisation is heading, how progress is measured, and how customers and the organisation alike benefit from these continuous improvement efforts.

Just as Kaizen emphasizes reflecting on processes to identify improvement opportunities, Heritage Day is an opportunity to reflect on the past and its lessons. It’s a moment to understand how far we’ve come as individuals, communities, and nations. Through this reflection, we can embrace the spirit of Kaizen by thinking about how we can continue growing and adapting to create a better future while staying grounded in our heritage.
