Yesterday I reviewed an employment contract for a client. Oh boy! One thing became very clear: many small businesses believe they do not need an HR professional because they are "too small."
The reality is that HR is not a luxury for your business; it is a necessity. A business can have only a few employees and still face serious legal and financial consequences if its employment practices are not compliant with South African labour laws.

That contract was outdated and legally non-compliant in several clauses. If challenged at the CCMA, it would have been heavily scrutinised. In fact, I now understand why the company had been losing cases.
When contracts are poorly drafted, outdated, or inconsistent with legislation such as the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), the Labour Relations Act (LRA), POPIA, and other applicable laws, businesses expose themselves to unnecessary risk.

This is why every business, regardless of size, should invest in proper HR and labour law compliance. Prevention is always cheaper than CCMA disputes, legal fees, reputational damage, and operational disruption.

Small businesses often assume that compliance is only a concern for large organisations. However, the law applies to all employers. Having compliant employment contracts, policies, disciplinary procedures, and HR practices is not optional,it is essential for protecting both the business and its employees.

HR is not a cost; it is an investment in the sustainability, growth, and legal protection of your business.
