South Africa’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list marks a major turning point, not just in regulatory compliance, but in restoring global trust and demonstrating what real reform can achieve.
Just two years ago, South Africa’s financial systems were under intense global scrutiny. Being greylisted raised concerns about transparency, oversight, and stability. Today, the country has emerged as a strong example of how dedicated reform, collaboration, and accountability can rebuild confidence and strengthen credibility.
The FATF’s decision follows South Africa successfully addressing 22 key action points aimed at improving controls against money laundering and the financing of terrorism. This milestone reflects the hard work of government, regulators, and professionals across many industries, including the accounting and tax profession, who have played an essential role in improving compliance standards.
This achievement carries major benefits for the economy. It lowers the cost and difficulty of international financial transactions, boosts investor confidence, and improves South Africa’s standing in global financial markets.
For the accounting and tax community, this moment highlights the critical role professionals play in upholding ethical standards and adapting to regulatory change. SAIPA members and other industry professionals have contributed significantly to this progress.
While the greylist era is behind us, continued compliance remains essential. FATF will still monitor South Africa’s systems, and slipping back could have serious consequences.
Sustaining this positive momentum will require ongoing integrity, vigilance, and commitment to future reforms. South Africa has proven what is possible, now we must protect the progress made.
