Five VAT myths we hear almost every week and what the law actually says.

1. “I must register the moment I start trading.”
Registration is triggered by turnover, not by opening your doors.

2. “I only check the threshold at year-end.”
It is any consecutive 12-month period, not your financial year. Once your taxable supplies pass R2,3 million you have 21 business days to register.

3. “The VAT I collect is my money.”
It never was. You hold it for SARS , spend it and you still owe it.

4. “I can claim VAT back on everything I buy.”
No. Entertainment and most passenger vehicles are never claimable.

5. “A bank statement is proof enough for SARS.”
It is not. SARS wants a valid tax invoice showing a VAT number.

From 1 April 2026 the compulsory VAT registration threshold is R2,3 million and voluntary registration is allowed from R120 000. The VAT rate stays 15%.

📌 Monday 31 August 2026 — the first provisional tax deadline.

If you own a company or CC, run a trust, or earn rental, freelance or investment income alongside your salary, this one is yours. Your IRP6 for the first period of the 2027 year of assessment (1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027) must be submitted and paid by 31 August.

Two things worth knowing before Monday:

Your estimate can't be a thumb-suck. SARS expects at least the "basic amount" — the taxable income on your most recent assessment — unless there is a proper reason to declare less.

Being late costs more this year. A 10% penalty applies to the amount outstanding, plus interest. And SARS's interest rate on outstanding tax goes up from 10.25% to 10.50% a year on 1 September 2026 — the day after the deadline. There is no grace period.

The upside: if your books are current, this is a short calculation and a payment. If they aren't, this is the week to sort it out.
