The days of the soak-away or French drain are coming to an end across the continent, and for a very practical reason: soil failure.
Traditional septic tanks only provide primary treatment, leaving the "heavy lifting" to the soil. Over time, in high-traffic tourism areas, the soil becomes saturated with organic matter and fats, leading to a "biomat" that blocks water from draining. The result? Surface ponding, foul odours, and a breeding ground for flies and disease. In sensitive African soils, from clay to fine sand, this can permanently damage the landโs ability to filter water naturally.
By treating wastewater before it hits the ground, we protect the structural integrity of the soil. This ensures the property remains hygienic, odour-free, and capable of processing water for decades without the need for expensive, destructive land reclamation.
Protecting the land means respecting the limits of what the soil can process.
