Another thought-provoking article on the state of the solar industry post the load-shedding feeding frenzy.
I’m happy that it appears that GreenHouse has weathered this storm far better than the vast majority of its competitors, as whilst we have certainly experienced a decline in business, it has been nowhere near as severe as what is being widely reported on the industry. I believe this is testament to our early recognition of the changing market behaviour, exceptional internal ability to respond to these changes, and a ferocious refusal to surrender market share to inferior competitors, be they newcomers or established players.
And evidence of this is in what I would ascribe as REAL rave reviews from our customers - with a 5.0 Google review rating I consider anything less than this mediocrity.

Selling solar power has become a cutthroat business in South Africa as declining load-shedding and an oversupply of installers make it difficult to grow sales.

Master of your Universe - Water Saving Tip #001

When you absolutely, positively need to fill the pool!

Install a backwash recycle settlement tank
Backwash the filter discharge into the settlement tank
Tomorrow fill the pool with the perfectly clear, settled water!

The tank is filled from the top, with the outlet tap well away from the bottom of the tank.
Every few months flush the tank by opening the bottom drain port.

Water saved - Recycling achieved - Universe mastered!

Solar powered bird flappers to help blue crane.

Written by Thys

The blue crane, South Africa’s national bird, is one of the endangered birds in our country that flies into power lines most often. The result is often catastrophic with the birds getting electrocuted.

According to the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) the use of bird flappers have been in use on power lines for some time now. These “bird flappers” are used to divert the flight of the birds away from the power lines.
A blue crane family
Constant Hoogstad the EWT’s Wildlife and Energy programme manager explained” The flapper is about the size of a teacup and has moving components. It hangs from the line so the bird can see it.”

They have however been working on turning it into a device that can also work at night, which is something they are very excited about. This would be especially valuable in areas where the blue cranes are known to roost and the risk is high of them flying into the power lines in the dark.

The flappers they will be using during the night would have flashing LED lights which would get charged through a solar panel. Although it would really benefit the blue cranes it was in fact aimed at preventing any birds for flying into power lines.

“But we have a register and our records show that of all the endangered and vulnerable birds that fly into power lines, the Blue Crane does it the most.”

Nearly half of the 25 000 blue cranes in South Africa live in the Western Cape. Of them sadly nearly 10% die yearly when they get electrocuted on the power lines. One of the local dairies in the Western Cape has teamed up with EWT to start doing blue crane spotting.

They are urging the public to record when and where they see them. They should take pictures and GPS co-ordinates if possible and then post the details to the Fair Cape Dairies page.

Hoogstad has asked landowners to get involved in this initiative. He said: “It’s important to know where the birds are seen so we know where to put the markers.”

According to Louis Loubser, marketing director of Fair Cape Dairies, they were very happy to see blue cranes on their farm and wanted to get involved in their conservation.

During the winter months they are most likely to be seen in flocks. The biggest threats to this beautiful bird is their loss of habitat as well as poisoning. The worst case so far was a farmer in the Richmond District in the Northern Cape who allegedly poised hundreds of them over a three-year period.

You won't believe the size of the new solar plant planned for Cape Town. 100Megawatts is a lot of energy, but still a drop in the ocean for what we need in SA.

Residential Solar Water Heating is still the most viable solution to reducing peak demand on Eskom - and it saves money, too!

The planned 100MW Redstone concentrated solar thermal power plant will be the biggest in South Africa
