Team Electrothread top of the Pops at Hallspeed Rally (21 June 2014)!
A big thanks to everybody involved for making this a Dream Result for Team Electrothread! Thanks also to SCC East Rand and their sponsors Hallspeed and Duxbury Netgear for hosting a fantastic rally.
It was something of a reunion for me and navigator Elvene Coetzee, who also sat next to me on my very first rally four years ago. Thanks Elvene for making it a day to remember. It was a pleasure having you in the car and sharing a few laughs!
After arriving late for the Recce Run due to Elvene’s car picking up a puncture on the way to my house on Saturday Morning, we then had another flat wheel after hitting a rock with my “Amarok” during the recce. I thought we should have stayed in bed and it was going to be one of those days to forget, but decided to just take it easy on the first few stages and then to see if we could get involved in the fight for top honours.
After stage 3, to my surprise, we were only 10 seconds behind Marko Himmel and Francois Schoobee in their VW Polo R2. With Hergen Fekken in the Toyota Yaris leading, but not eligible to score in an S2000 car, we were effectively in a battle for the lead! I realised that we could not let this opportunity slip and that we had to push on stage 4, seeing as Ernie van der Walt, who “borrowed” my regular navigator Mari van der Walt for the day, was only 2 seconds behind us and pushing! We completed the 16.14km stage in a time of 11min28sec, which was bettered only by Hergen Fekken and Carolyn Swan in the Yaris S2000 and was a full ten seconds faster than reigning Northern Regions Champion Tjaart van der Walt making a welcome return in the Team Electrothread Toyota Tazz. We now enjoyed a 13 second gap to Marko Himmel, with Ernie vd Walt another three seconds behind.
My first ever rally win now seemed possible, but we knew that the dice would be on to the end and that both Marko and Ernie would be pushing hard for the win. Our Team Electrothread Toyota Etios R2 was still running faultlessly and with Stages 5 to 8 being repeats of Stages 1 to 4, we were quietly confident. Unfortunately Ernie and Mari emerged from Stage 6 with two flat wheels and a bent rear axle on their Ford Fiesta R2, so they were effectively out of the running. Third place was taken over by Tjaart vd Walt and Nico Swartz, who were just 16 seconds behind Marko Himmel, so it was going to remain a three car battle to the end!
The status quo remained through stage 7, so we started stage 8 on a mission to protect a slender lead of 10 seconds over Marko Himmel and 15 seconds over Tjaart vd Walt. Once again we managed to post the second best time after Hergen Fekken’s Castrol Toyota Yaris S2000. Unfortunately Marko Himmel’s Polo suffered a broken gearbox mounting which saw them retire from the rally. This meant that Tjaart vd Walt moved into second place giving Team Electrothread a one two finish in class S3 for 1600cc multi valve cars as well as overall (with Hergen Fekken not eligible for Trophy Honours). Well done to Tjaart who proved once again that he is one of the best drivers around and can never be underestimated!
In the end, Elvene and I decided to surrender the win and withdraw from the event due to the fact that I had assisted the organisers with the writing of the Route Notes prior to the rally. Official winners of the event are therefore Tjaart vd Walt and Nico Swartz in the Electrothread Tazz. The podium was shared by Jaco and George Baker in second (in another S3 Toyota Tazz), with third place going to Sean and Gavin Hewitt who made a welcome return to Northern Regions rallying in their VW Polo R2.
