Team Electrothread top of the Pops at Hallspeed Rally (21 June 2014)!

A big thanks to everybody involved for making this a Dream Result for Team Electrothread! Thanks also to SCC East Rand and their sponsors Hallspeed and Duxbury Netgear for hosting a fantastic rally.

It was something of a reunion for me and navigator Elvene Coetzee, who also sat next to me on my very first rally four years ago. Thanks Elvene for making it a day to remember. It was a pleasure having you in the car and sharing a few laughs!

After arriving late for the Recce Run due to Elvene’s car picking up a puncture on the way to my house on Saturday Morning, we then had another flat wheel after hitting a rock with my “Amarok” during the recce. I thought we should have stayed in bed and it was going to be one of those days to forget, but decided to just take it easy on the first few stages and then to see if we could get involved in the fight for top honours.

After stage 3, to my surprise, we were only 10 seconds behind Marko Himmel and Francois Schoobee in their VW Polo R2. With Hergen Fekken in the Toyota Yaris leading, but not eligible to score in an S2000 car, we were effectively in a battle for the lead! I realised that we could not let this opportunity slip and that we had to push on stage 4, seeing as Ernie van der Walt, who “borrowed” my regular navigator Mari van der Walt for the day, was only 2 seconds behind us and pushing! We completed the 16.14km stage in a time of 11min28sec, which was bettered only by Hergen Fekken and Carolyn Swan in the Yaris S2000 and was a full ten seconds faster than reigning Northern Regions Champion Tjaart van der Walt making a welcome return in the Team Electrothread Toyota Tazz. We now enjoyed a 13 second gap to Marko Himmel, with Ernie vd Walt another three seconds behind.

My first ever rally win now seemed possible, but we knew that the dice would be on to the end and that both Marko and Ernie would be pushing hard for the win. Our Team Electrothread Toyota Etios R2 was still running faultlessly and with Stages 5 to 8 being repeats of Stages 1 to 4, we were quietly confident. Unfortunately Ernie and Mari emerged from Stage 6 with two flat wheels and a bent rear axle on their Ford Fiesta R2, so they were effectively out of the running. Third place was taken over by Tjaart vd Walt and Nico Swartz, who were just 16 seconds behind Marko Himmel, so it was going to remain a three car battle to the end!

The status quo remained through stage 7, so we started stage 8 on a mission to protect a slender lead of 10 seconds over Marko Himmel and 15 seconds over Tjaart vd Walt. Once again we managed to post the second best time after Hergen Fekken’s Castrol Toyota Yaris S2000. Unfortunately Marko Himmel’s Polo suffered a broken gearbox mounting which saw them retire from the rally. This meant that Tjaart vd Walt moved into second place giving Team Electrothread a one two finish in class S3 for 1600cc multi valve cars as well as overall (with Hergen Fekken not eligible for Trophy Honours). Well done to Tjaart who proved once again that he is one of the best drivers around and can never be underestimated!

In the end, Elvene and I decided to surrender the win and withdraw from the event due to the fact that I had assisted the organisers with the writing of the Route Notes prior to the rally. Official winners of the event are therefore Tjaart vd Walt and Nico Swartz in the Electrothread Tazz. The podium was shared by Jaco and George Baker in second (in another S3 Toyota Tazz), with third place going to Sean and Gavin Hewitt who made a welcome return to Northern Regions rallying in their VW Polo R2.

ELECTROTHREAD CUSTOMERS SMILING AGAIN AS DABROWSKI AND MALYSZ FINISH THIRD AND FOURTH IN PUNISHING SEALINE CROSS-COUNTRY RALLY IN QATAR!!!

CONGRATULATIONS ON "HARNESSING SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE"

Overdrive Racing Toyota Hiluxes are built in SA by Hallspeed with all Wiring Harnesses supplied by Electrothread.

DOHA (QATAR): The Overdrive Toyota duo of Marek Dabrowski and Adam Malysz completed the demanding five-day Sealine Cross-Country Rally, round four of the 2014 FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies, in third and fourth overall in their Team Orlen cars to keep their hopes alive in the title race.
Held in punishing heat over five desert selective sections, where the emphasis was on the co-driver and accurate navigational skiils, Malysz and navigator Maciej Marton fell behind FIA World Cup leader Vladimir Vasilyev on the final stage and then slipped behind their Polish colleagues Dabrowski and Jacek Czachor late in the stage and finished fourth.

The Brazilian duo of Reinaldo Varela and Gustavo Gugelmin were fifth in the third of the surviving Toyota Hiluxes.

Saudi Arabian driver Yazeed Al-Rajhi – the winner of the Russian and Italian Bajas with the Toyota team – held second overall for a time before a series of four punctures cost him dearly and the Saudi damaged the rear axle of his Hilux trying to reach the finish of the third stage.

Business commitments meant that Kazakh driver Kanat Shagirov was forced to miss the event in the fifth Overdrive Toyota.

“A big thanks to all my team for their hard work over the last month in Abu Dhabi and then here in Qatar,” said Overdrive team director Jean-Marc Fortin. “It’s a little frustrating not to have challenged harder for second position, because I really felt that Yazeed could match and beat Vladimir and gain some more championship points. Maybe we were a little inconsistent at times.

“It was good to see Reinaldo win the stage today and to have three cars inside the top five of such a difficult rally is no mean feat.”

Twenty-two cars started the international section of the five-day rally and Al-Attiyah sn**ched the early advantage in the short opening 164.18km stage. Dabrowski and Varela had been as high as third and fourth overall after the second passage control, but the Pole rolled near the finish and the Brazilian was badly delayed with navigational woes.

The four Overdrive Toyotas duly began the punishing second 396.46km loop stage from fourth, fifth, eighth and 13th overall, with Al-Rajhi and Malysz leading the way. The Saudi hung on to Al-Attiyah’s coat tails through the early kilometres and was holding a strong second position until the lost his way no less than three times and finished the stage in third.

“I started well and was driving well,” said the Saudi. “Then we lost our way. It is easy to do that in Qatar. There were three Minis going round and round until one of us found the track. I lost four or five minutes, but the goal was to be in front of Vladimir (Vasilyev) and I achieved that.”

Dabrowski, Malysz and Varela reached the stage finish with the fifth, sixth and seventh quickest times and held seventh, fourth and 10th overall at the overnight halt.

The third loop stage of 411.76km was the longest of the entire event and covered much of the remote south of Qatar. Al-Attiyah continued to edge in front, but Varela enjoyed a useful stage performance and finished second behind the Qatari and climbed to sixth. The fourth and fifth times for Malysz and Dabrowski moved them up to third and fourth overall, but that was at the expense of Al-Rajhi.

The Saudi had been running as high as second on the stage before collecting a series of three flat tyres. He only carried three spare wheels on the Hilux and, when he punctured for a fourth time and tried to continue on the rim, he damaged the rear of the car and the axle failed before the final series of sand dunes. The mistake cost the Saudi his place on the leader board and he retired.

The fourth stage was the most difficult in terms of navigation and many of the leading drivers had problems. Malysz followed Dabrowski to the stage finish in convoy and the pair recorded the fourth and second quickest times. That was sufficient for Malysz to overhaul Vasilyev and sn**ch second overall. Dabrowski and Varela were fourth and fifth heading into the final 362.97km special.

Vasilyev managed to find a way past Malysz to claim second on the final stage and Dabrowski also edged in front of his Team Orlen colleague to sn**ch third. Varela was in superb form and the fastest time of the day confirmed that he finished in a solid fifth position.

It was a wet and wild weekend in George for the Garden Route Rally, the final round of the 2013 SA National Rally Championship. We finished strongly in our Toyota Etios R2, thanks to a cautious and controlled speed on the slippery stages. In fact, it rained so much six of the event's 12 stages were cancelled! Here's a photo gallery from Dave Ledbitter from the event: http://www.rallyworld.net/index.php/gallery/view/150.
