Digital skills get a young person to the door. Life skills get them through it.

Today at the Sizimisele Phola Youth Development Centre, Faith Wesson, founder of In My Feelings Game, ran the life skills and personal development half of the training. Her work is built on a simple insight: emotional intelligence and decision-making are not soft skills, they are the operating system that everything else runs on.

In My Feelings Game has grown, enabled through the enterprise and supplier development partnership between Hitachi Construction Machinery Southern Africa (HCSA) and Thinkroom, and is this week running its own CSR work.

Watching 30 young people work through it together is an incredibly powerful and inspiring moment, one that is genuinely difficult to put into words, even in a press release.

One more site to go. Witbank tomorrow.

Day two, Kriel.

At the Life Restoration Miracle Centre today, the digital skills segment of the rollout came alive. Thuli Dlamini, founder of Ikusasa Technology Solutions, walked the cohort through the practical tools they need to work and learn in the current economy.

There is a particular kind of learning that only happens when the person at the front of the room comes from somewhere relatable. Thuli has been on the other side of an ESD programme. Hitachi Construction Machinery Africa (HCSA) backed her business through the HCSA-Thinkroom partnership. Now Ikusasa is back in the room, running their own CSR work with the next generation.

Day 1, Middelburg.

Around 30 young people kicked off digital and life skills training at the Somaphepha MPCC this morning, the first of four Mpumalanga community rollouts this week, led by Ikusasa Technology Solutions and In My Feelings Game. Elana Geyer is on the ground today representing Thinkroom.

What makes this one feel different: it is two SMEs that have grown through a ten-year ESD partnership now taking their own social impact work into the communities where their corporate partner operates. Thuli (Ikusasa) and Faith (In My Feelings) are the founders who Hitachi Construction Machinery Southern Africa (HCSA) and Thinkroom have worked alongside in the corporate ESD programme. Now they are the ones in the room with the next generation, with HCSA's CSR commitment behind them.

Three sites still to go. Kriel tomorrow.

Workers' Day was built to honour people who show up and do the work. This includes founders too.

The ones burning the midnight oil writing proposals no one asked for yet. Doing their own admin, their own sales, their own accounting, and somehow still showing up with energy for their team.

Entrepreneurship is some of the most relentless work there is. Largely invisible, rarely celebrated, and completely chosen. To every entrepreneur in our ecosystem, today is yours too!

32 years of freedom. And yet, the most powerful act of freedom many South Africans still choose every day, is the decision to build something of their own. To bet on themselves, on their ideas, and on their country.

Entrepreneurship is one of the truest expressions of freedom. Today, we celebrate that freedom, and the founders brave enough to use it.

Hot cross buns don't make themselves. Someone woke up early, measured the spice, proved the dough, and waited. Pickled fish doesn't happen on the day either, that's a Tuesday thing. Maybe Monday if you're serious.

Easter in South Africa isn't really about shortcuts, it never has been. Neither is building something that actually works. The idea is just the recipe. What you do around it, the structure, the patience, the right people in the kitchen, that's what makes it land on the table.

Wishing a peaceful Easter to all!

Today we’re at a pre-SONA consultative session at 22 ON SLOANE with the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD), which is focused on the final validation of the National Entrepreneurship Strategy (NES) and its Implementation Framework.

This is about understanding the real problems entrepreneurs face so we can continue to solve them in practical, meaningful ways. Ahead of SONA tomorrow, the message is clear: entrepreneurship must sit at the centre of how we grow South Africa’s economy.

Policy instruments are being designed, frameworks are being shaped, and commitments are being secured today. The NES aims to be practical, inclusive, and responsive, and we’re here to make sure founders’ voices are part of that conversation.

Breaking into a corporate supply chain as a founder can be a huge hurdle because access is rarely clear, simple, or built with SMEs in mind. Procurement processes are cautious by design, and without the right entry point, even strong businesses can struggle to get a foot in the door.

A practical way we’ve seen this dynamic start to shift is through procurement sample packs. When done effectively, they let your product do the talking, reduce risk for the buyer, and open the door to supplier conversations without asking for a big upfront commitment.

Through our work helping founders gain market access, we supported Lebogang Mashaba, founder of RealPPE Marketplace, to do exactly that. As Lebo shared, “A website or product photo can tell a good story, but a sample lets the product speak for itself. When someone can hold it, test it, and see the quality for themselves, it removes doubt.” That shift helped turn curiosity into procurement conversations.
