Paleontologists on Thursday heralded the discovery of a previously unknown small armoured dinosaur in southern Argentina, a creature that likely walked upright on its back legs roaming a then-steamy landscape about 100 million years ago.

It is the final week of the 4 Weeks for 4 Permanent Plastic Replacements. On the last week of this challenge the team has decided to take on more difficult replacements - cling wrap. These items are used daily in many kitchens because of its ease of use and accessibility – making this potentially one of the most challenging replacements.

So, what are the alternatives?
• Beeswax-based covers are reusable up to a year and it is biodegradable. This article provides more information about the benefits of using beeswax-based covers: https://cleanlivingconsultant.com/7-reasons-to-use-beeswax-wrap-instead-of-plastic-cling-wrap/
• Reusable cloth sewn covers.
• Place your leftovers in a container.

Even though this is the last week of Plastic Free July, we are committed to carrying on replacing as many single use plastics items as possible. We encourage that you be more mindful of your plastic use and continue to make the swap to a more sustainable choice.

It's week 3 of the 4 Weeks for 4 Permanent Plastic Replacements.

This week the team has decided to replace two items, plastic cotton buds and dental floss, by switching to eco-friendly brands.

Plastic cotton buds are non-biodegradable and according to Sustainability Victoria (2021), approximately 1.5 billion plastic cotton buds are produced a day – many of which end up in our oceans and rivers, polluting water sources, consumed by wildlife and destroying habitats. This can easily be avoided by switching to an ‘eco-friendlier’ brand which is biodegradable. Some brands to look out for include Organic cotton buds and the Flushable Eco cotton buds – found at your local Dischem or Clicks.

Did you know dental floss is plastic? Yet another non-biodegradable product that is found in almost every household. Fortunately, there are biodegradable options available for dental floss. Switch to brands such as , , and .

We would like to know what item you’ve replaced this week. Let us know in the comments below.

The week ahead represents week 2 of Plastic Free July

Did you know that it takes roughly about 500 years for a plastic toothbrush to decompose?

A bamboo toothbrush only takes between 4-6 months to decompose!

While the lifespan of the bamboo toothbrush is equivalent of that of the plastic toothbrush , we feel that the decomposition time difference between the two is a worthwhile trade off.

4 Weeks for 4 Permanent Plastic Replacements: WEEK 1

This week the Afro Development Planning team has decided to replace single use plastic water bottles with reusable stainless steel bottles, glass bottles or hard plastic bottles (which is also more affordable).

While having a reusable bottle is great, it does require discipline and planning ahead. Remember to fill up your bottle before you leave home and take it with you! This is also a great way to practice adequate hydration - so you save the planet and improve your health!
