A project of this scale is never built by one team alone.

Club Med South Africa represents an extraordinary collective effort across consultants, contractors, subcontractors, municipalities, developers and professional teams, all working towards one shared outcome.

Across a 30-hectare site, the project includes 75 buildings, six pools, extensive infrastructure, a new dam, a revitalised estuary and thousands of details brought together through careful planning, coordination and delivery.

At its peak, more than 1,700 people were on site daily, with over 4.5 million manhours completed without a lost time injury.

Beyond the numbers, this milestone speaks to the relationships, teamwork and strength of KZN’s construction industry. Every package, meeting, drawing, inspection and person on site played a role in bringing this world-class resort to life.

The next chapter at Mpilo Nature Reserve is already underway.

M3 Africa is currently managing the construction of a new airstrip that will allow guests to fly directly into Vikela Safari Lodge from Johannesburg or Durban.

For a remote safari destination, access is a critical part of the guest experience. The airstrip will strengthen the connection between major city centres and the reserve, making the journey to Vikela more seamless while supporting the long-term vision for the lodge.

Construction is expected to be complete by mid-September 2026, with the airstrip operational from October 2026.

It is another step in shaping Vikela into a destination that is not only beautifully located, but carefully planned, connected and ready for the level of hospitality it has been designed to deliver.

The team behind the moving parts.

On Club Med South Africa, M3 Africa was appointed as Project Manager and Principal Agent, responsible for helping one of the most complex resort builds in sub-Saharan Africa move towards a fixed opening date.

Their role carried across design development, procurement, approvals, contractor coordination, stakeholder engagement and delivery, bringing every part of the programme together with structure and direction.

To meet the scale of the project, M3 Africa proposed a multi-package construction approach, breaking the work down by building type and appointing specialist contractors for each area. This created more complexity to manage, but allowed the right teams to focus on the work they were best equipped to deliver.

That is where M3 Africa adds value, in the planning, coordination and decision-making that keeps ambitious projects moving from vision to completion.

The outcome is only as strong as the team behind it.

Delivering Club Med South Africa Beach and Safari Resort required more than appointing a generalist project team. It required the right specialists, across the right disciplines, with the experience to manage every detail.

Craft of Architecture have led the design from the earliest stages of the project and through to completion. Mobius Interior Design Architects shaped all the guest facing spaces, to create unique and memorable experiences throughout both resorts.

Struxit Projects, Vertex Engineers and CKR Consulting Engineers supported the technical delivery across civil works, structural design, services, electronics and engineering. MHS Consulting guided the quantity surveying and cost control, while EcoCoast and Confluence Environmental Consultants helped navigate the environmental requirements of building within sensitive natural settings.

SafeCo Consulting managed the Health and Safety requirements during construction, and IJ Consulting led the Security design workstream.

LandArt Studio’s inspiring landscape design filled in the two resorts with verdant gardens and spaces to compliment the resort architecture.

Each appointment served a specific purpose.

The strength of the project team was not only in individual expertise, but in how those disciplines were coordinated, aligned and managed towards one shared outcome.

On a project of this scale, risk is not only about what goes wrong. It is also about what never becomes a problem because it was planned for early enough.

Across the Club Med South Africa and Vikela Safari Lodge delivery programme, multiple high-value packages were running at the same time, with different contractors, consultants, approvals, site constraints and operational deadlines all moving together.

A delay in one area could have affected another. A late design decision could have caused cost pressure. A missed coordination point could have slowed down procurement, access, services or handover.

This is where proactive project management becomes critical.

Clear packaging, early mock-ups, regular coordination meetings, detailed reporting structures and constant communication between the professional team, contractors, local authorities and stakeholders helped reduce risk before it became disruption.

The result was not luck. It was planning, pressure-testing and keeping the right people aligned at the right time.

For M3 Africa, that is often the difference between a project that reacts to problems and a project that is structured to avoid them.

The right destination starts with the right piece of land.

For Vikela Safari Lodge, one of the most important early decisions was finding a game farm that could support the scale and ambition of the brief.

It needed more than a beautiful setting. The site had to include the Big 5, accommodate up to 230 guests and allow for the movement of 25 game drive vehicles.

Over an 18-month period, schemes were developed for five different game farms before Mpilo Game Reserve in Pongola was selected as the right fit.

Long before construction began, the project was shaped through feasibility thinking and planning. Each option had to be assessed not only for what it offered on paper, but for how it could support the guest experience, the logistics and the long-term success of the lodge.

That early groundwork gave the project the clarity it needed to move from vision to delivery.

Remote sites do not allow for generic solutions.

On the Vikela Safari Lodge build, the project’s location in Pongola meant that material availability became a daily consideration. Specifications had to be reviewed and adjusted according to what could be sourced locally at the time, without losing sight of the required quality or programme.

Skilled labour was another challenge. To keep the build moving, more than 200 staff were accommodated on site, supported by a canteen, temporary showers and toilet facilities. The balance of the workforce was sourced from the communities surrounding Mpilo Game Reserve, with over 600 people employed on the project at its peak.

Then there was the reality of building within a Big 5 environment.

At one point, a bull buffalo entered the site at night after a gate was left open, making an entire section of the lodge a no-go area for two days. Elephants and even a cheetah also made their way onto site during the build.

Each challenge required the same thing, calm decision-making, practical coordination and a project team that could keep moving without compromising safety, quality or delivery.

Complex projects do not fail because of one big issue. They become difficult when hundreds of small decisions have to happen at the same time.

On the Club Med South Africa Beach Resort, one of the biggest challenges was the scale and speed of the build. Multiple high-value packages were running simultaneously across a constrained 30-hectare site, with contractors, consultants and specialist teams all needing information, approvals, access and direction at the same time.

The solution was structure.

M3 Africa proposed a multi-package construction approach, dividing the work by building type and appointing specialist contractors to focus on the areas they were best suited to deliver. This created more moving parts to manage, but it gave the project the focus, flexibility and expertise needed to keep quality and programme aligned.

Early mock-up hotel rooms were also built off site and fully fitted out, allowing the design team and Club Med to approve furniture, finishes, services and details before the accommodation blocks were completed on site. This helped reduce late changes, speed up decision-making and protect the final guest experience.

For a project of this scale, delivery is not only about solving problems as they happen. It is about putting the right systems in place so the project can keep moving before those problems become delays.

On time, as promised.

Delivering Club Med South Africa and Vikela Safari Lodge meant managing a fast-track programme with ten simultaneous, high-value and highly complex packages running across a constrained site.

Multiple contractor teams were working at the same time, each requiring construction information, documentation, query resolution and oversight to keep the programme moving without compromising on quality.

Early in the construction phase, three full mock-up hotel rooms were built off site in a nearby warehouse and fitted out completely. This allowed the design team and Club Med to review and approve the furniture, finishes, services, switches and details before the accommodation blocks were completed on site.

It was a practical decision that gave the team clarity, reduced unnecessary changes and helped ensure the guest accommodation could be delivered to the agreed standard.

Club Med South Africa is officially open.

For M3 Africa, this is the reveal of a journey that began long before the doors opened.

In 2019, M3 Africa Consulting was appointed as the overall Project Manager and Principal Agent for the Club Med South Africa Beach and Safari Resort project, following a competitive bidding process. What followed was a landmark brief to help deliver the first single-phase resort project of this scale ever undertaken in sub-Saharan Africa.

Between 2019 and 2023, the project evolved through multiple iterations, design development milestones and external challenges, including COVID-19 and wider socio-political and economic events. Throughout this period, the core team remained committed to the vision of bringing a world-class resort to life.

In October 2023, the project was formally announced, with a firm commitment to welcome the first guests in July 2026.

What followed was an intensive delivery programme across the Beach Resort and Safari Resort, requiring detailed construction design, procurement, municipal approvals, community engagement, contractor coordination and the management of multiple specialised work packages.

This was not a standard build. It was a project defined by scale, complexity, collaboration and an unwavering commitment to world-class standards.

As Club Med South Africa opens its doors, M3 Africa is proud to have played a leading role in bringing this landmark destination to life.
