On what would’ve have been Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s 100th Birthday, we, as the DPQS Team opted to remember the ‘Father of the Nation’, not by retelling his story, but by being living testimonies of his legacy.
A few members of the staff decided to dedicate their 67 minutes by making a contributing towards the KZN Children’s Hospital Trust as well as volunteering their time, painting the hospital boundary walls and the cleaning of windows at the KwaZulu Natal Children’s Hospital, formally known as Addington Children’s Hospital, South Beach, Durban.
A First of its kind on the African Continent, the hospital was built in 1928 by the Councilor of Durban Mary Siedle. With the peak of the apartheid regime in full effect in 1984, the hospital was abruptly shut as it was repugnant to treating children of all races.
An astounding 28 years later, the hospital still stands but is in dire need of refurbishment and helping hands. With the hospitals' main goal of re-establishing Africa’s First Children’s Hospital as a world-class children’s hospital, it was nothing but a privilege and an honor to be a part of history in the making.
