320 WEST STREET- Durban
At thirty stories 320 West Street was considered the tallest building in Durban when it was completed in 1973.

This photograph was taken whilst under construction and just reached its highest point. Not much safety equipment visible back in the day!! 😬🙀

Please share.

What a lovely initiative from the if we all do just one thing on this list to honor Madiba we can make a big difference.

Join us in transforming the inner-city in 100 ways over 100 days to celebrate Mandela’s 100th anniversary.

Every year around Mandela Day (his birthday, 18 July) people want to volunteer or to donate goods to help the poor. This year, being the Centenary of Mandela’s birth, the Denis Hurley Centre working with other NGOs is encouraging a ‘Mandela 100’ - 100 ways to transform the lives of the poor in inner-city Durban, which can be enacted any time during a period of 100 days: from 30 May to 6 September, with 18 July in the middle.

If you are an individual or a group of friends or an organisation (school, corporate, faith group) and you are looking for a way to celebrate Mandela’s legacy have a look at the list here and see what appeals to you.

There are:
- general ways of volunteering
- specialist ways of volunteering
- donations of everyday goods
- donations of specialist goods
- special events and items to purchase

In each case, contact the e-mail given to find out more details (e.g. if donating goods, you can find out exactly what is needed and where to drop off.

Certificates will be issued to all who register their participation. For general information : [email protected]

(This is an amended list. The first one only contained 99 ideas!!).

Bigger is not always better. Amen to that.

Bigger is not always better.
Amen to that.

SPIGA: a cautionary tale.

The sad closing and current outpouring of love on social media for SPIGA Durban, did not translate into support for their disastrous Durban North branch which opened in March 2015.

Premises which were substantially bigger than Florida Road, paying much higher rent, serving far less customers ultimately resulted in the entire business failing.

Spiga North was the same owners, the same menu, the same food, and in many cases the same staff... yet comments confirm ‘hated the Durban North one’, ‘Durban North was terrible’, ‘loathed Durban North’ etc etc.

What was so right with one spot (small, cosy, always busy, on Florida Road) was everything wrong with the other (big, soulless, empty) which barely got a mention on social media when it closed its doors in August last year.

We send our love and support to the Santoniccolo Family who poured their heart and soul into Spiga and have been such a big part of establishing and transforming our beloved Florida Road. We hope we will see you again soon.

So whilst the moral of the story ‘bigger is not always better’ is clear, it’s little consolation to most of us who will miss Durban’s favourite Florida Road family restaurant.
