How to Start a Business Without Capital

Buying a franchise with recognizable branding helps you take advantage of a built-in audience.


1.

Choose a business that lends itself to low startup costs. Service businesses, such as bookkeeping, pet sitting or concierge services, don't need much more than a business card to network your services. While service businesses are better tailored for low startup costs, if you have an exceptional product, don't let the funding stop you from developing a business.

2.

Write a detailed business plan that focuses on what makes your product unique and why consumers will want to buy it. Spend a considerable amount of time working out a marketing plan that focuses on sales first and product production second. This is how Greg Gianforte, creator of Brightworks Development, established his business model that was later sold to McAfee Associations for more than $10 million, as noted by Emily Barker for Inc.om.

Keep your day job while you are building a market for your business. Set aside a percentage of your monthly earnings to help fund basic business, costs such as business cards, website hosting or business registration.

Register your business with the least expensive registration possible that still protects you, your products and services. Many service companies can operate as a sole proprietor, obtaining a fictitious name registration for as little as $10 through most county clerk's offices. If you are concerned with personal liability, file for a limited liability company or corporation, though the costs range from $50 to $350 depending on the state you register in -- LLC and corporate registrations are done through your secretary of state.

Create a prototype of your product or a sample of your services.

Obtain production contracts. Lock in rates for making your product based on sales with price points dropping as you hit minimum order amounts.

7.

Get out and sell your product or services. Show the prototype to your target market and get pre-paid orders. Send orders in to produce products as you hit your target minimums.

8.

Expand as revenues come in and your company proves to be a viable revenue source.
