Mr. Nazeer Jamal (Pr. Reg. EAP) (Pr. Sci. Nat.) Appointed to eThekwini Municipal Forum for Climate Change

Khweza Environmental Consulting is proud to announce that its Managing Director, Nazeer Jamal, has been appointed to the eThekwini Municipal Forum for Climate Change, representing the Minara Chamber of Commerce.
The Forum was officially launched at the Durban ICC and forms part of eThekwini Municipality’s commitment to addressing climate change through collaborative, inclusive, and action-oriented governance, aligned with the Durban Climate Change Strategy, the Paris Agreement, and South Africa’s Climate Change Act (No. 22 of 2024).

The Forum brings together municipal leadership, the Office of the Mayor and City Manager, civil society, business, academia, youth, and traditional leadership to guide climate change mitigation and adaptation, with a strong focus on vulnerable communities.

Commenting on his appointment, Nazeer Jamal said:
“Climate change is no longer an abstract environmental issue,  it is a development, economic, and humanitarian challenge. This Forum marks a shift from working in silos to working collectively, turning strong policy into practical, locally responsive action. I look forward to working closely with the Mayor, City Manager, municipal officials, and fellow Forum members to support eThekwini’s climate ambitions and long-term resilience.”

Through Minara Chamber of Commerce, this appointment reinforces the role of business and professional expertise in supporting climate-resilient economic development and sustainable growth.

Khweza Environmental Consulting remains committed to constructive partnerships with government, business, and communities to strengthen climate resilience and inclusive development in eThekwini and beyond.

Al Baraka Bank South Africa in collaboration with Penny Appeal South Africa and Khweza Environmental Consulting launched this year's Arbour Week project in Lenasia, Johannesburg.

Together, we planted trees and seedlings at a local public school not just to shade the playground, but to grow hope, resilience, and a healthier planet for the next generation.

Here’s to more trees, bees, and planted legacies.

Six years ago, Khweza Environmental Consulting was born in a cramped 1-bedroom apartment, with me working from the edge of my bed because I didn't have a desk and a chair. I had my faith, 10 years of experience in national, provincial and local government working with EIA's and auditing, a deep concern for sustainability, and a vision big enough to turn a bedroom into a boardroom.

We now have grown into a respected environmental consultancy with over 100 clients across six provinces, a team of passionate young EAPs, and a proud record of protecting South Africa’s natural heritage while keeping development moving.

We’ve faced some wild challenges along the way :

Dealing with auditing an explosive major hazardous facility which taught us that audits aren’t just box-ticking, they’re about preventing the next "Oops, that plume was not steam."

Another client started building before checking if the land was actually… well, buildable. Cue: The notorious Section 24G, wetland delineation in gumboots, and teaching developers the phrase “duty of care.”

Another development located in a Critical Biodiversity Area with endangered grasslands, we had to balance eco-sensitivity with feasibility and managed after many late nights to ensure a viable "offset".

But beyond the paperwork and site visits, it’s the people that made this journey worthwhile. Clients who stayed with us. Government officials who came to trust our expertise. Communities who welcomed our presence and not giving us the boot.

And then there’s Mr Dlamini, my very first client. He took a chance on me when my business had no track record, just passion and honesty. Six years on, I still do work for Mr. Dlamini's companies. That kind of trust is priceless.

Today, Khweza stands for more than compliance and for reminding developers that environmental regulations don’t mean the end of your project, they mean you’re building it right.

Here’s to six years of learning, laughing, leading and laying the foundation for the next decade of impact.

Let’s grab a coffee and brainstorm your next project. Already got one with us? Don’t stress, we’re not sipping lattes, we’re smashing deadlines.

💚 Yours in conservation and compliance,
Nazeer Jamal

Plant Rescue and Relocation is the process of carefully removing plants from a site where they would otherwise be destroyed due to development or other human activities and relocating them to a safer, suitable environment. This helps preserve biodiversity, protect endangered species, and maintain ecological balance.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the site we selected in collaboration with the eThekwini Municipality is exceptionally well-maintained and pristine, boasting a rare and ecologically significant Sandstone Sourveld. This vegetation type is critically endangered due to habitat loss, making this conservation effort vital. The site’s rich biodiversity, minimal human disturbance, and careful ecological management ensure that rescued plants can thrive, maintaining the natural integrity of the area.

Celebrating the 5th anniversary of Khweza Environmental Consulting feels a bit like standing on top of a mountain, looking back at the wild hike it took to get here. When I left my cushy government job back in August 2019, after 11 years of serving in various departments, including environmental affairs and water affairs, people thought I was nuts. "You're leaving a stable job for what?" they'd ask. My answer was simple: I wanted to chase my passion for the environment, even if it meant I might end up as Durban's best-dressed Uber driver.

Yes, I really did sign up with Uber as a backup plan. I figured if Khweza didn’t take off, at least I could still navigate the streets like I used to navigate bureaucracy. But, let’s be real—nothing could have prepared me for what came next. COVID-19 hit, and suddenly, my new business lost two of its biggest clients. I went from being the boss of my own company to a tutor for UNISA by day and a photographer by night, just to keep the lights on. If you'd told me then that this was part of the "entrepreneurial journey," I might have opted for a one-way ticket back to the 9-to-5 life.

But here we are, five years later. By the grace of the Almighty and with the unwavering support of my family and friends, we’ve not just survived—we’ve thrived. My deepest gratitude goes to the environmental consultants and partners who helped guide me through the stormy waters. And to my incredible clients, who trusted me with their developments, paid their invoices on time (you’re the real MVPs), and spread the word about Khweza—thank you. You’re the reason we’ve grown to serve over 100 clients across 6 provinces.

Now, let’s talk about my team—the real backbone of Khweza. These folks have pulled off the impossible, working odd hours, juggling projects, and doing whatever it took to get the job done. From day one, my vision was to help young graduates break into this field, and today, I’m proud to say we’ve hired over 15 of them. Watching them grow and thrive has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

As a company, we've made strides in becoming a leader in the industry. We’ve protected countless plant and animal species, includin
