Exploring the exciting future of Multi-Omics!

Yesterday, KRISP was proud to host the regional Separations Multi-Omics Showcase Roadshow, in partnership with Illumina, Inc.

The event brought together researchers, scientists and industry experts to explore some of the latest advancements in next-generation sequencing, single-cell analysis, spatial biology and proteomics.

We were honoured to welcome an exceptional line-up of keynote speakers, including Dr Lukas Paul, Prof Michael Pepper, Dr Theo Heyns, Dr Gary Prescott and KRISP's own Dr Jennifer Giandhari.

Representing KRISP as the regional speaker, Dr Giandhari reflected on what a decade of genomic surveillance looks like in practice and the incredible journey that has helped position genomics as an increasingly important tool for understanding and responding to health challenges.

"It was great to bring together this calibre of speakers, from across genomics, proteomics and clinical research, for a full day of science in Durban," said Dr Giandhari.

From exploring how a single sequencing platform can support multiple areas of omics research, to discussions around biomarker discovery, data interpretation and the exciting future of proteomics, the day offered a fascinating glimpse into where the field is heading next.

A special thank you to Maritza Hanekom and the SEPARATIONS team for including KRISP on this country-wide roadshow, and to all our speakers and members of Durban's research community who joined us.

The future of multi-omics is incredibly exciting, and we're proud that KRISP could play a role in bringing these important scientific conversations to Durban.

Celebrating Women, Wellness & Team Spirit at KRISP

As we celebrate Women’s Month, KRISP took some time to focus on something that matters just as much as the work we do — our people.

South Africa’s Women’s Day, celebrated on 9 August, commemorates the historic 1956 Women’s March, when more than 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the apartheid government’s discriminatory pass laws. Led by courageous women including Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn, the march became a powerful symbol of women’s courage, resilience and determination in the struggle for freedom and equality.

Today, Women’s Month gives us an opportunity not only to honour that legacy, but also to recognise and celebrate the contributions of women in building our country and shaping its future.

On Friday, 7 August, the KRISP team came together for a fun and energetic Wellness & Fitness session, creating an opportunity to celebrate the incredible women who contribute to our team while encouraging everyone to prioritise their health and wellbeing.

With professional instructors from Virgin Active leading the way, our team took part in beginner-friendly activities including step classes , Zumba, stretching and a variety of light fitness exercises. From enthusiastic participation to plenty of laughter, it was a wonderful reminder that staying active is even better when we do it together!

While Women’s Month provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements, strength and contributions of women, wellness is something we believe should be embraced by everyone.

Events like these help us build a healthier, happier and more connected KRISP community.

Inspiring the next generation of scientists this National Science Month!

As part of the 2026 National Science Month celebrations, the KRISP team was proud to participate in the UKZN School of Agriculture and Science 'Be A Scientist Programme', where we introduced Grade 11 and 12 learners to the exciting world of genomics and scientific research.

Our interactive session gave learners an insight into who we are at KRISP, the work we do, and the real-world impact of genomics. They also heard inspiring personal stories from our Master's and PhD students, as well as our postdoctoral fellows, who shared their journeys into science and what motivates their research.

The learners then put their scientific thinking to the test by taking part in a fun forensic mystery challenge, using basic science principles to solve a classroom case as part of the programme's Amazing Race.

Thank you to the University of KwaZulu-Natal Science Centre for inviting us to be part of this wonderful initiative, and to our valued partners, DIPLOMICS and the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) for making outreach opportunities like this possible.

Empowering teachers today to inspire the scientists of tomorrow.

Yesterday, KRISP had the pleasure of hosting 28 Life Sciences teachers from across KwaZulu-Natal as part of a developmental workshop series organised by the University of KwaZulu-Natal Science Centre.

The teachers, all cluster leaders from their respective districts, spent the day exploring how Life Sciences concepts taught in schools connect to real-world applications in genomics and public health. Through case studies in pathogen genomics and human genetics, discussions around disease surveillance, and tours of our laboratories, participants gained valuable insights into the impact of genomics on society.

The day also included two hands-on activities that teachers can easily replicate in their classrooms. From extracting DNA from frozen strawberries using everyday household items to solving a genetics-based forensics mystery, there was plenty of excitement and practical learning.

We hope that every teacher left inspired and equipped with new ideas, activities and case studies to help bring Life Sciences to life for their learners.

What happens when you combine curious young minds, strawberries, candy, and DNA science?

On Friday, KRISP welcomed 30 Grade 11 learners from IkamvaYouth's Chesterville Branch for a fun-filled day of science exploration and discovery.

Learners from Umkhumbane Secondary School, Chesterville Secondary School, Wiggins Secondary School, and Bonela Secondary School learnt about university opportunities, bursaries, DNA, viruses, and the exciting careers available in science and research.

The learners then got hands-on, extracting DNA from strawberries and building their own virus models using candy!

The impact of the day was perhaps best summed up by two of the learners:

"Today was such a constructive day. We learnt about DNA and even extracted it from strawberries. The experience has re-evoked my love for science," said Vusi Maundlane.

"I've never really been interested in science before, but after today, I had so much fun and want to know more about science and how I can use it to help others," said Thalente Mqono.

As part of the DIPLOMICS Ignite outreach initiative, the programme helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world science, showing learners how genomics can be used to solve challenges in health, agriculture, biodiversity, and the environment. UKZN's College of Health Sciences

A proud day for KRISP and African science.

We congratulate Prof. Tulio de Oliveira on receiving the Presidential Order of Mapungubwe in Gold — one of South Africa’s highest national honours — recognising his leadership in genomic surveillance and public health innovation across Africa.

This achievement reflects years of collaboration, scientific excellence, and the collective efforts of teams and institutions working to strengthen Africa’s ability to respond to infectious disease threats.

As Prof de Oliveira said: “This was a team effort.”
