Did you know about Patlo?

The BaTswana Kingdom have a special ceremony to perform as a family before their children get married called Patlo.

Patlo means to ask for a woman's hand in marriage. The whole process involves the elders especially with the groom's side, they'll go to the bride's family to ask for their daughter to marry their son. Once this has been done, then the negotiations can begin about the bride price known as bogadi.

The BaTswana parents strongly believe that most marriages fail amongst the younger generation because the Patlo practice has been ignored or compromised.

It is believed that bogadi is a very important
aspect of patlo amongst the BaTswana Kingdom families even though it may vary from tribe to tribe.

A woman does not get pronounced married until the groom's parents have parted with a number of cattles and the cows are called dikgomo tsa bogadi meaning the bride price cows, which makes all young women feel comple after the groom have paid that price.
