Our partners who work to prevent and address gender-based violence - like TVEP Tvep SouthAfrica - are feeling the fallout of this sweeping policy change. Their expert staff, tasked with educating survivors of sexual assault about their rights and available services, have two choices: 1) withhold critical information from r**e victims regarding their emergency contraception options to maintain programme support from international donors; or 2) inform survivors of their sexual and reproductive health rights, and lose access to grants designed to provide trauma centre support AS WELL AS holistic, needs-based survivor services. Owing to tough decisions, TVEP - and many other NPOs in the sector - have lost millions in support with short notice. How, then, can they be expected to manage the ±45 r**e victims A MONTH who walk through their doors? Volunteers are saving the day, every day. It's NOT acceptable to make blanket policy reform when the impacts exclude ethical contemplation of such delicate and complex matters.
The global gag rule devastates the rights and health of the most vulnerable, including women, girls, and LGBTI people. The policy bans foreign NGOs who receive U.S. funding from providing legal abortion services—even referrals or information on abortion. And now, the Trump administration has made this already misguided policy even more harmful. Learn more: https://osf.to/31G8lwX
