☀️ “BCMM DOESN'T OWN THE SUN.”

We keep hearing this when the subject of SSEG registration comes up.

And you're right.

BCMM doesn't own the sun.

But that's not what solar registration is about.

If your solar installation is connected to the municipal electricity network, there are registration and compliance requirements that apply to that connection.

We've also heard quite a few people say:

“I'm not registering. I'll wait and see what happens.”

Here's something worth knowing before making that decision.

At an ECA meeting this year attended by electrical contractors, representatives from BCMM's SSEG department advised contractors that BCMM has purchased drones which will be used to identify properties with solar installations.

Contractors were advised that identified properties could then be referred to Revenue Protection for investigation.

We want to be clear that we're sharing information communicated directly to contractors at that meeting. We are not suggesting that BCMM has published a public drone enforcement notice, because we have not seen one.

But if your plan is to simply “wait and see what happens”, it's worth understanding that BCMM appears to be preparing to actively identify solar installations.

This isn't about owning the sunshine. ☀️

It's about what is connected to the municipal electricity network.

Our advice is simple:

Don't wait until somebody comes asking questions.

Find out whether your system is registered, whether it is compliant and what you need to do to get it sorted.

🌧️ Rainy Days, Cloudy Skies... Is My Solar System Still Working?

We've had a few cold, wet days in East London, and we've received quite a few questions about solar performance during bad weather.

The good news? Your solar system is probably doing exactly what it's should.

Here's what you can expect:

☁️ Solar panels still generate power in cloudy weather, but production can drop to anywhere between 10% and 40% of what you'd normally see on a bright sunny day.

🔋 Your batteries may not fully recharge if several overcast days occur in a row. This is completely normal.

⚡ If your battery reaches its minimum state of charge, your inverter will automatically use Eskom power (if available) to keep your home running.

🌩️ Preparing for storms and bad weather:
✔️ Make sure your inverter and batteries have good ventilation.
✔️ Keep the area around your equipment dry and free from clutter.
✔️ If you have whole-house surge protection, ensure it has been checked during your annual electrical inspection.
✔️ If severe weather is forecast and your batteries are low, consider allowing the system to charge from the grid before the storm arrives.
✔️ Don't panic if your generation is low. Once the sun returns, so will your production.

💡 Remember: Rain actually helps wash dust off your solar panels, so once the skies clear, your system will often perform even better.

If your system isn't charging at all, is showing fault codes, or you're unsure whether everything is operating correctly, give us a call. We'd be happy to inspect it and make sure it's performing exactly as it should.

This National Lottery-funded project is about far more than installing solar panels. It's about creating a safer, more comfortable and more sustainable environment for the incredible children and staff who call Guardians of Hope home.

Together with our partners C&L Enterprises, we've already achieved some remarkable milestones:

☀️ A large-scale solar PV system is now generating clean, reliable energy.

🔋 High-capacity battery storage has been installed to provide dependable backup power.

⚡ The electrical infrastructure has been upgraded and commissioned.

💧 A new rainwater harvesting system has been completed.

🚿 A new commercial boiling water system has been installed.

🏫 Three classrooms are being energised to create brighter, more functional learning spaces.

❄️ Air conditioning is currently being installed to keep the children comfortable throughout both summer and winter.

🎥 Our next milestone will be the installation of four AI-powered security cameras, monitored 24 hours a day by a professional security company, providing an additional layer of protection for every child, staff member and visitor.
