Former Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa falls to his death in France - reports

South Africa's ambassador to France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel "Nathi" Mthethwa, has been found dead in Paris, just a day after he was reported missing.

According to French media reports, the 58-year-old diplomat’s body was discovered outside the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile in the Porte Maillot district.

It is alleged that he fell from the 22nd floor of the hotel, though local authorities have not yet confirmed the exact circumstances surrounding his death.

Mthethwa was officially reported missing on Monday evening. His sudden disappearance and subsequent death have prompted both French and South African authorities to launch investigations.

At the time of publication, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) had not issued an official statement. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues.

However, Chrispin Phiri the spokesperson for the Ministry said:" We are aware of unfortunate reports pertaining to Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa we will issue statement once there is official information."

Mthethwa, a seasoned politician and former Cabinet minister, was appointed as ambassador in 2024.

Facebook owner Meta restarts facial recognition tech in 'celeb-bait' crackdown

SYDNEY/NEW YORK, - Three years after Meta (META.O), opens new tab shut down facial recognition software on Facebook amid a groundswell of privacy and regulator pushback, the social media giant said on Tuesday it is testing the service again as part of a crackdown on "celeb bait" scams.

Meta said it will enroll about 50,000 public figures in a trial which involves automatically comparing their Facebook profile photos with images used in suspected scam advertisements. If the images match and Meta believes the ads are scams, it will block them.

The celebrities will be notified of their enrollment and can opt out if they do not want to participate, the company said.

The company plans to roll out the trial globally from December, excluding some large jurisdictions where it does not have regulatory clearance such as Britain, the European Union, South Korea and the U.S. states of Texas and Illinois, it added.

Monika Bickert, Meta's vice president of content policy, said in a briefing with journalists that the company was targeting public figures whose likenesses it had identified as having been used in scam ads.

"The idea here is: roll out as much protection as we can for them. They can opt out of it if they want to, but we want to be able to make this protection available to them and easy for them," Bickert said.

The test shows a company trying to thread the needle of using potentially invasive technology to address regulator concerns about rising numbers of scams while minimising complaints about its handling of user data, which have followed social media companies for years.

When Meta shuttered its facial recognition system in 2021, deleting the face scan data of one billion users, it cited "growing societal concerns". In August this year, the company was ordered to pay Texas $1.4 billion to settle a state lawsuit accusing it of collecting biometric data illegally.

At the same time, Meta faces lawsuits accusing it of failing to do enough to stop celeb bait scams, which use images of famous people, often generated by artificial intelligence, to trick users into giving money to non-existent investment schemes.

Under the new trial, the company said it will immediately delete any face data generated by comparisons with suspected advertisements regardless of whether it detected a scam.

The tool being tested was put through Meta's "robust privacy and risk review process" internally, as well as discussed with regulators, policymakers and privacy experts externally before tests began, Bickert said.

Meta said it also plans to test using facial recognition data to let non-celebrity users of Facebook and another one of its platforms, Instagram, regain access to accounts that have been compromised by a hacker or locked due to forgetting a password.

WOMAN EXTRADITED TO APPEAR FOR THE ASBESTOS MATTER

FREE STATE: Following a lengthy process involving the Hawks, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), and Interpol, a 37-year-old South African woman who is based in the United States of America (USA) has been successfully extradited and placed under arrest. The extradition was approved by USA authorities on 31 July 2024. She arrived in South Africa on Thursday, 8 August 2024 and was processed by the Hawks detectives to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Monday, 12 August 2024. She was the personal assistant to former Free State Premier, Ace Magashule when crimes relating to the R255 million asbestos contract were allegedly committed.

It is alleged that the Free State Department of Human Settlements awarded the contract in a joint venture between businessman Edwin Sodi's Blackhead Consulting (Pty) Ltd and Diamond Hill Trading without following proper procurement processes. Sodi, Magashule, former Head of Department Ntimose Mokhesi, former MEC Sarah Mlamleli, and others have made court appearances for fraud, corruption, money laundering, and contravention of the Public Finance Management Act.

A total of 18 accused, including five companies, are expected back in the Free State High Court sitting in Bloemfontein for trial from 15 April 2025 to 23 June 2025.
