How can businesses reduce exposure to electricity tariff increases and diesel price shocks?

In this University of Johannesburg research, Dr Bonginkosi Thango and the research team model a grid-connected solar and storage system for a mid-sized commercial facility. The study highlights how combining solar, storage and the grid can support more resilient operations and reduce reliance on grid energy.

The findings are specific to the site and system modelled, but they add to an important conversation about the role of energy storage in commercial and industrial energy planning.

At Freedom Won, we value research that grounds energy-storage conversations in local conditions and real operating needs.

In a recent study, they combine solar photovoltaic (PV) power panels, battery storage, and a bidirectional inverter for flexible power conversion at a site in a developed area. The model is optimised for the specific solar and climatic conditions in Johannesburg.

Spotted: Freedom Won batteries at Kadoma Mine!

They’re part of a 600kW solar installation supporting the mine’s operations, offices and milling plant, with excess energy fed back into the grid.

Always good to see our batteries out in the field, helping keep things moving!

Solar Energy Projects, this is a great example of solar and storage working together effectively

Getting more value from solar is not only about how much energy you generate. It is also about how much of that energy you can use when you actually need it.

The Freedom Won eTower 2 enables homeowners to store available solar energy generated during the day and use it later, helping reduce reliance on electricity purchased from the grid.

Designed around flexibility, the system offers:

✅ 5.12 kWh per module
✅ 1–6 module scalability
✅ Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity
✅ Monitoring through the Freedom Won app

It is a simple energy journey: 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐭, 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭, 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐭.

Happy Heritage Day, South Africa!

This year’s theme, “Reimagine our heritage institutions for a new era,” reminds us that heritage is not only about preserving the past, but also about shaping a more inclusive, innovative and connected future.

As our cultures continue to evolve, may we celebrate the stories, traditions and shared heritage that make South Africa uniquely ours.
