Oak Valley

Oak Valley We focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, classically styled and beautifully crafted. Host of FNB Wines2Whales MTB Race. The Table at Oak Valley Restaurant.

Established in 1898 by Sir Antonie Viljoen, this magnificent 1786ha family estate is one of the pioneering farms in the country. In 1908 a cellar was built, but was sadly mothballed during the Second World War when fruit was in greater demand. New vineyards were established in 1985, followed by the release of our much acclaimed maiden vintage in 2003. With vineyards located on mountain slopes over

450m above sea level, ripening occurs slowly, vines bear ultra-low tonnages and troops of baboons compete relentlessly for the spoils!

This Blueberry Clafoutis from the cookbook
Sunday Lunching at The Table
is wonderfully tart, delicate and just sweet enough.

Made with cream, eggs, lemon zest and blueberries baked into a soft custard-like batter, then dusted generously with icing sugar before serving.
Even better enjoyed warm with good vanilla ice cream and a glass of Oak Valley Groenlandberg Pinot Noir — whose bright red fruit and earthy notes pair beautifully with the berries and citrus.

Blueberry Clafoutis
• 125ml cream
• 6 eggs
• 95g castor sugar
• 95g salted butter, melted
• Zest of 1 lemon
• 95g cake flour, sifted
• 300g blueberries

Whisk together the cream, eggs and sugar. Add melted butter and lemon zest, then gently fold in the flour. Scatter blueberries into a greased baking dish, pour over the batter and bake at 180°C for 20 minutes until golden and just set. Dust with icing sugar and serve warm.

Farming teaches you to work with nature, not against it. But every now and then, nature reminds you that it holds the final say. The same rain that fills dams and nourishes the soil can also strip branches bare overnight. The same land that gives so generously can suddenly demand resilience.

Walking through the orchards this week, there’s both heartbreak and perspective. Fruit on the ground. Mud underfoot. But also green grass returning, mountain air washed clean and trees that will, in time, carry fruit again.

That’s the quiet complexity of farming…living in constant partnership with something beautiful, unpredictable and far bigger than ourselves.
