A planning gap can affect the control room.
A missed message can affect the whole shift.

SYNC starts with visibility — understanding how every action connects to the bigger picture.

When we see the whole system, we make better decisions, support each other sooner, and reduce unnecessary risk.

Father’s Day Reflection: The Lamp That Never Disappeared

A few years ago, we were underground when water accumulation prevented the team from reaching an area where support work was required near a seal.

My father, our CEO, moved forward to assess the situation and find a way to resolve the water issue. As the water became deeper, I kept my eyes fixed on his cap lamp. At one point, I could no longer see his light.

My instinct as a daughter took over. I moved forward until I reached him. When he saw my lamp approaching, he turned and said: “Annie? I wondered who the lampie was.”

I told him:
“I could not see your lamp anymore, so I came to find you.”

That moment has stayed with me.

Because the truth is, my father has come to find my lamp many times in life — when my own light felt dim, when I was unsure, when I was learning, and when I needed guidance.

This Father’s Day, we honour not only fathers, but the leaders, mentors and protectors who keep watch over the people they love and lead.

To every father underground, on surface, at home, and in leadership — thank you for being someone’s lamp in the dark.

Week 4 – Day 5: Evolution

Continuous improvement is not complete until the same risk does not return.

Evolution means we do more than react. We learn, improve our standards, strengthen our controls, and make sure repeated issues are addressed in a way that changes how we work going forward.

If the same findings, the same defects, or the same unsafe conditions keep returning, then the system has not truly improved yet.

Real evolution happens when lessons are carried forward, actions are embedded, and teams can see that the risk has been reduced — not just discussed.

Reflection question for today:
Are we improving how we work each day, week, month, or are we becoming comfortable with the same unresolved risks returning?

Week 4 – Day 4: Navigation

You cannot lead what you cannot see.

When risks are scattered across reports, discussions, observations and stoppages, leadership must be able to connect the dots before pressure turns into an incident.

Navigation is about seeing where the operation is under strain — repeated belt alignment issues, high-stress transfer points, water accumulation, defects, stoppages and overdue actions — and then guiding support to the right place at the right time.

Visible risk helps leadership act before pressure becomes failure.

Reflection question for today:
Can we clearly see where our operation is currently under strain, or are we only reacting once the problem reaches us?

Week 4 – Day 3: Improvement

Filed is not fixed.

A report, investigation, audit or discussion only adds value when it leads to real improvement in the workplace. Closing the action on paper is only the first step — the real test is whether the risk has been reduced, the condition has improved, and the team can see the change in the field.

This week we are challenging ourselves to think beyond admin close-out and focus on meaningful operational improvement.

Reflection question for today:
Where have we closed an action, but still need to verify whether it truly changed the risk in the workplace?

One issue may be a fault.
The same issue coming back again and again is a pattern.

Today’s focus asks:

Do we actively look for repeated failures, repeated escalations, repeated defects and repeated unsafe conditions?

Patterns are often visible in our reports, inspections, team feedback and repeat issue logs. When we take the time to connect the dots, we move from reacting to the same problems to correcting the cause.

Repeated belt mistracking.
Repeated belt slip.
Repeated lagging wear.
Repeated unsafe conditions.
Repeated escalations.

These are not just separate events — they may be the system telling us where attention is needed.

Continuous improvement means we do not ignore the same issue, the same risk, or the same response happening again.

Patterns help us prevent.

Before incidents happen, there are often signals.

A loose bolt.
A small spill.
Repeated observations.
