Harambee in the News: Tackling Youth Unemployment - The Need for Coordinated Action and Economic Growth
The Presidential Youth Employment Intervention (PYEI) recently released its third quarter report, highlighting ongoing efforts to address South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis.
Speaking to eNCA’s Thembekile Mrototo, our Chief Government Relations Officer, Mosuoe Sekonyela unpacked the barriers that young people face and emphasised the importance of a unified national strategy.
According to Mosuoe, while initiatives like the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Youth Employment Service (YES) South Africa, and the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) are making strides, significant structural barriers—such as high job-seeking costs, limited data access, and geographic challenges continue to hinder young people. He highlighted the need for a unified approach, where focused and intentional interventions not only help young people find work but also ensure they remain employed.
