The South African Study Skills Institute

The South African Study Skills Institute We aim to change educational impact in South Africa through the delivery of study skills knowledge to students, parents and communities.

SASSI activities are currently limited to online media due to funding challenges. Pilot testing of the concept has bee The South African Study Skills Institute (SASSI) is a newly formed non-profit organisation which aims to impact the output of South African educational systems through delivering study skills techniques and knowledge to communities, parents and students. The formation of the organ

isation was driven by the results of an informal study skills delivery programme in which the majority of the eighty participants achieved a 20-40% improvement in academic performance. Such improvement holds the potential to change the face of South African educational output. Besides the obvious implications to individual students, the financial burden upon government, educational institutions and parents could be reduced through the reduction of total time taken to complete qualifications. The viability of Governments promises of Free Higher Education could be within reach if SASSI succeeds in its long term of goals. The legacy impact of apartheid era education continues. Huge sections of our population are unaware of how to study and have little access to role models for behavioural examples. Literature talks of the impact of concerted parental cultivation of children as having a far greater impact on academic performance than cash spend. Effective techniques and approaches to study are open source but not widely known or taught. SASSI will deliver such knowledge to communities, parents and students. The organisation aims to formally deliver the study skills programme, at scale, in the UThungulu district of KwaZulu Natal. The programme will be funded by local businesses wishing to support their local communities. Donations are tax deductable as SASSI is registering under section 18A of the Income Tax Act. Refinement of the delivery model will follow the formal pilot and the programme replicated in all districts of South Africa.

When kids start growing and looking like adults, we assume that they should know better and act better. In reality, our kids in high school are struggling and need our mentoring and guidance just as much, if not more than ever.

Their brains and bodies are growing and changing; their hormones are flooding their thinking; social media is inundating their every moment, they are expected to know what they are doing with their life and need high marks to get there; fear of rejection and peer pressure are paramount, drama is around every corner along with increased violence. This is a time when they are exploring their identity and trying on different hats.

Awareness and acknowledgment of these factors through our support, respect, mentoring, and presence can help ease this stage of growth and transition.

The biggest buy-in for students in following classroom expectations is when they have had a voice in creating them and the rules are relevant to student day to day concerns. By including students in the process of creating the class rules or expectations, you are giving them agency, a sense of ownership, and responsibility in the room.

Co-creating classroom expectations can be done at any time of year and mid year is sometimes a good time for a reset.

Check out the this SEL unit that includes step by step lessons for co-creating classroom expectations with your class. There are ideas for journal prompts as well as student worksheets.
