Fidget spinners - Painful or helpful?
Fidget spinners are all the rage at the moment with it seems like every kid owning or wanting one. Although the craze may wear off, kids and adults that actually need the spinner will probably hold onto theirs. These fidgets actually help children and adults with anxiety, stress and sensory processing disorders
So how do fidgets help?
Well, the theory goes that fidgets play a role similar to biting nails, or twirling hair , tapping one's foot or getting up periodically to walk around working - all examples of movement required to concentrate when performing a task. Movement has been shown to enhance learning as both the left and right hand sides of the brain become engaged.
The fidget provides a small movement and subtle touch input that helps calm the nervous system as well as providing small movements which assist learning.
Why do kids need to fidget?
Kids are asked to sit still for long periods of time to get through their academic work. Most of them also do not have the opportunity to play enough and fidgeting is a sign of this. If their fidgeting becomes too disruptive in a classroom situation, the teacher will then ask them to stop and the child will then become distracted and unable to do what is required of them.
However, boundaries need to be set when using the fidgets so they are seen as a tool and not a toy! The fidget should be small enough so it can be used without the child looking at it. It should be an aid, not a distraction, to the child or other children around them and it should be kept either in their hand or on their desk!
So overall fidgets have their uses!!!!!!!!!!! Even though they be driving adults slightly insane right now. If you are interested in purchasing one, or a fidget cube, please comment below.
