A lifelike mount depends on details most people never think to check — the shape of the ear bases, the detail around the eyes and nose and the muscle detail on the neck and shoulders. African Game has very short hair, so all these details are very visible. Get any of them wrong and the trophy looks wrong, no matter how good the hide is.

Our taxidermists work from field measurements, detailed reference photography and actual hunting photos to shape our custom forms. We don’t buy commercial forms at all. That's the difference between a trophy that looks frozen and one that looks lifelike.

Sunlight fades hide and fur, dust dulls fine detail, and hide beetles, mites and moths can cause damage that's often irreversible by the time it's noticed.

Most of this is preventable with a few simple habits — keeping mounts out of direct sunlight, dusting gently rather than wiping, and checking for early signs of pest activity before it spreads.

Bacteria begins working on a hide the moment an animal is down, and Africa's heat speeds up the damage. Left too long, hair slip becomes a real risk, and it cannot be undone once it happens.

The fundamentals are simple: get the animal into shade quickly, remove dirt before it dries, avoid dragging the cape, and salt generously, especially around the ears, lips and eyes. A few photos from multiple angles also help your taxidermist recreate the animal's true colouring.
