☀️ Cape Town has unveiled South Africa’s first municipality-built hybrid plant: a R220m, 7MW solar and 10MWh battery facility in Atlantis, projected to save residents R400m over 20 years.

🔧 Metros are now building and procuring their own solar and storage, not just waiting on Eskom. That points to steady demand for utility-scale PV and battery skills in the Western Cape.

☀️ A typical South African household can now go fully off-grid for about R2,915 a month, according to a MyBroadband cost estimate. That covers solar panels, a battery and a backup generator, financed over seven years, plus fuel. The same energy from Eskom costs about R2,868.

🔧 With the costs this close, price stops being the main argument. Proper sizing and safe generator integration now decide whether an off-grid system actually delivers.

Even on a 7-year loan with 20% interest, a solar power system combined with a generator sufficient to meet the average household’s demand will cost roughly the same as electricity from Eskom.

☀️Rooftop Solar Update

Eskom has extended the registration deadline for residential solar PV and battery systems to 30 September 2026.

⚡ However, Eskom still stresses that unsafe installations may be disconnected, highlighting the importance of safe, compliant and professionally installed solar systems. 🔧👨🏽‍🔧

Eskom has backed down on rooftop-solar rules, extending the deadline and scrapping fines and costly sign-offs, but still claims the power to cut off “unsafe” systems.

⚡ Running an electric car in South Africa saves between R12,000 and R30,000 a year, according to GAC Group and charging operator Black Tower. MyBroadband puts a 44km daily commute at R897 a month on electricity against R2,617 on petrol.

🔧 South Africa has around 445 charging sites, and new energy vehicle sales this year are already at 97.5% of last year's total. Real opportunities for electricians and installers here. Worth looking into EV charger installation training while the market is still opening up.

At current electricity and fuel prices in South Africa, electric is always the cheaper option. The precise difference depends on various factors, including how far you drive and where you charge.

The risk of fires caused by poor Solar PV and battery installation and maintenance is increasing 🔥

Faulty batteries, inverter problems, loose wiring, and damaged electrical connections are among the contributing factors.

This highlights the importance of using qualified installers and registered electricians.👨🏽‍🔧⚡

The PVGreenCard industry endorsement is valuable in promoting safer installations by equipping electrical contractors with the knowledge and practical technical skills needed to install and maintain solar PV systems correctly. This will reduce fire risks and improve system safety and reliability.🛠️✅

One in four structural fires in South Africa is related to malfunctioning solar power systems, according to new response data from Fire Force.

Africa's solar market just had its strongest year on record, and the numbers say a lot about where our industry is heading.

Africa added 4.5 GW of new solar in 2025, 54% up on the year before and the fastest growth ever recorded on the continent. South Africa was still the biggest market at 1.6 GW.

Solar Africa Expo runs from 2 to 4 March 2027 at the CTICC in Cape Town, alongside Africa Energy Indaba 2027. It covers the whole value chain, from panels, inverters and batteries to EPC, O&M, mini-grids and project finance, and puts solar companies in the same room as governments, utilities, developers and financiers.
