So a while ago I posted an article about Alien Invasive Plants and all their evils. This is not a retraction of that statement, but rather a comment on the recent fires in the George area of the past few days. Its easy to blame the all evil doing AIPs, but at what point do the managers charged with managing natural resources take responsibility for the maintenance of biomass fuel loads on their respective estates? And I am not refering to AIP solely but I am referring specifically to large tracts of indigenous vegetation. Where have the Fire Bosses of this world gone? why are we so afraid to light a fire for a controlled burn? Is there a skills deficiency that needs to be focused on? Why is fire a management tool not being employed to control biomass fuel loads

SANParks is intensifying efforts against environmental crimes in the estuaries in the Garden Route National Park. Today, a new vessel was launched as part of numerous actions to clamp down on environmental crimes. The new vessel to replace the 10-year old rubber duck is to patrol the Knysna estuary.

The vessel was named iLINDILE (Xhosa meaning – ‘It awaits’). The 5.8m Infanta rubber duck has two Yamaha 60-horse power, four stroke engines sourced through Knysna Marine.

Well done SANParks

The catastrophic fire in Knysna and surrounds has given the fynbos and vegetation in the area an opportunity for a fresh start, with SANParks even making free indigenous trees available for affected homeowners in the scarred landscape.
