Warren Buffett turned 96 yesterday, and I found myself reflecting on May 2018, when I flew to Omaha for the Berkshire Hathaway AGM.

It is a long way to travel to sit and listen to a man talk, and it shaped how I work, how I run this practice, and how I see investing.

I went because when someone has done this work as well as he has, for as long as he has, you go and hear it from the man himself.

I came home with far more than I went for.

I went expecting to learn about markets. I came home having learned about people.

What landed hardest was what he said about risk. "Risk comes from not knowing what you're doing."

I had always been taught that risk lives in the market. In the volatility. In the headlines. He put it somewhere far closer to home. “The risk is in you, and in everything you have not taken the time to understand.”

That changed me in two ways.

It steadied me. Conviction in this work comes from knowledge. Once you understand what you own and why you own it, a bad month loses its power to frighten you. I could sit with a client through a falling market and explain exactly why we were not going to move.

And it made me listen differently. You cannot know what you are doing with someone's money until you know who they are. What keeps them awake. Who they are carrying. What they would never sell, whatever the numbers said. The homework is the person.

Eight years on, I still start with the person and work outwards.

Omaha is a long way from George. It came home with me.

A belated happy 96th, Mr. Buffett. Thank you for the questions I have been asking ever since.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Petro van Staden, beloved mother of our colleague and friend, Anneke van Emmenis.

Anneke is part of The One Financial family, and that makes her family our family too.

When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure. The people we love. The memories we hold. The time we are given together.

Voting has closed in the George Herald Best of George Awards, and before the week runs away, I wanted to say thank you properly.

To everyone in George who took a minute to vote for us, I'm grateful. A second nomination running in the Best Financial Planning / Brokers category means a great deal to me and to every person on our team.

Recognition like this is shared. It belongs to the clients who trust us with the decisions that shape their lives, and to a community that has always had a way of standing behind its own.

Twenty-five years on, our work carries on exactly as it began. Steady, independent guidance for the families and businesses of the Garden Route, given with the same care we started with.

Whatever the result, my gratitude is the same. Thank you for your vote, and for the trust behind every one of them.

Since we shared our Best of George nomination last week, the messages and kind words from so many of you have genuinely moved me. Thank you. It’s reminded me, all over again, why I love what we do.

People sometimes ask what makes an independent practice different. For me, it comes down to one thing. When you sit across from us, the advice you receive is shaped by your life and your goals, and nothing else. No targets, no products we’re nudged to sell. Just honest guidance from people who know you, and often know your family too.

That’s the kind of relationship the Best of George Awards quietly celebrates. The clients who become familiar faces. The first nervous meeting that turns into twenty years of walking the road together. We don’t take a single one of those relationships for granted.

I won’t pretend it isn’t a wonderful feeling. To be recognised once was humbling. To be recognised again, a year later, tells me that the work my team pours into this community every single day is being felt by the people it’s meant for. That means the world to me.

Some days, you're the one who didn't make it.

Last weekend at Bigway Camp, I was part of a 16-way skydiving formation. Except not quite. I was the only one who didn't reach it.

It was hard. These things are.

But my coach saw it differently. He didn't see a gap in the formation. He saw someone who was still in the jump.

That stayed with me all weekend.

I thought about Lewis Hamilton. Seven world championships. The most decorated driver in Formula One history. And yet 2025 was the worst season of his career. Not a single podium. But he stayed in the car. Two races into 2026, he was back on the podium.

I thought about the Springbok squad announced earlier this year. Forty-nine players called up. And dozens more who trained just as hard, came just as close, and didn't hear their name called. Not yet. Missing out is not the same as being finished.

Everyone who has built something worthwhile has collected more hard days than good ones. Most of those hard days arrived disguised as mistakes. But they were clues. Each one pointing toward a better way through.

The question is never whether the hard days will come. They will. The question is whether you will be ready when they do.

That is what financial planning is, at its core.
Not the hope that things will always go well. But the preparation that means when they don't, you are already standing on solid ground.

Last week, four vehicles filled with donated food, blankets, clothing, and essential supplies were delivered from our offices to the George Disaster Management Centre.

What came through our doors over those few days was a reminder of something deeply reassuring about this community. People showed up. Quietly, generously, and without hesitation.

To every person who dropped off donations, shared the message, or reached out to ask how they could help, THANK YOU. Whether you were a long-standing client, a neighbouring business, a friend, or someone we had never met before, every contribution mattered.

We would also like to thank the George Municipality and the George Disaster Management Centre for the work being done across the region to support affected families and coordinate relief efforts during a very difficult week.

Thank you as well to the George Herald for helping keep the community informed and for amplifying local relief initiatives throughout the week.
