Hy het nooit 'n kamera gebruik nie. Geen foto's, geen verwysings nie, slegs 'n fotografiese geheue wat dekades van bewegende lig, wind en skaduwees in die Afrikaveld vasgevang het.

Gerrit Pitout (1953–2024) was een van Suid-Afrika se mees gerespekteerde landskap-meesters. Hy het oor 'n tydperk van vyf dekades geskilder met 'n presisie wat byna onverstaanbaar is. Hy is verlede jaar oorlede en is gevestig as 'n legende in die Suid-Afrikaanse kunswêreld.

Hierdie groot-formaat olieverfskildery (1.1m × 80cm) is een van sy laaste werke. Dit hang tans in die FAK-VTM Kunsgalery onder in die Voortrekkermonument in Pretoria — en is nou aanlyn beskikbaar vir enige iemand om te bie.

Die wildernis praat in 'n fluistertaal van goud en bruin, 'n antieke landskap wat altyd onthou. Die ligval in hierdie werk weerspieël Riaan Prinsloo se kenmerkende atmosferiese styl. Die ingewikkelde, amper grafiese lyne van die fyn takkies kontrasteer pragtig teen die massiewe, soliede basisse van die kremetarte. Dit is 'n kunswerk wat die gees van die inheemse landskap eer, vasgevang in lae van akrielverf wat die sonlig amper tasbaar maak.

The wilderness speaks in a whispered language of gold and brown, an ancient landscape that always remembers. The fall of light in this work reflects Riaan Prinsloo's characteristic atmospheric style. The intricate, almost graphic lines of the fine twigs contrast beautifully against the massive, solid bases of the baobabs. This is an artwork that honours the spirit of the indigenous landscape, captured in layers of acrylic paint that make the sunlight almost tangible.
