Site induction is one of the most overlooked legal requirements.

Every worker, subcontractor, and visitor must be inducted before starting work on site.

Induction must be recorded and signed.

Without proof of induction, the site is not compliant with Construction Regulations.

This is one of the first things inspectors ask for.

Many sites believe the work looks safe, but compliance starts with documentation.

Understanding the legal requirements before work begins can prevent costly delays.

Public protection is a legal requirement on every construction site.

We often see sites with open work areas, no barricading, and no warning signage.

This exposes workers, visitors, and members of the public to unnecessary risk.

Construction Regulations require that dangerous areas must be properly secured and controlled.

Failure to do so can result in work being stopped immediately.

Good safety practice is not only about protecting workers,
it is about protecting everyone around the site.

Using the same safety file for multiple projects is a common mistake ⚠️
Each construction project must have its own site-specific safety file.

This includes:
• Baseline risk assessment
• Project appointments
• Method statements
• Induction records
• Contractor information

A copied file will not pass inspection ❌

Compliance requires that your documentation reflects the actual work being done on-site, not a template from a previous job.

Taking shortcuts with safety files often leads to work stoppages, penalties, and delays.

One of the most common compliance failures on construction sites is missing appointment letters.

You may have a supervisor, a safety officer, and workers on site, but without written appointments, the site is not compliant.

The OHS Act and Construction Regulations require that responsible persons must be formally appointed in writing.

This includes supervisors, competent persons, and other responsible roles.

Inspectors will always check appointments first.

Compliance is not about what you have in place,
it is about what you can prove.

We often hear:
"I have a safety file already"

But when we check it, it is missing critical documents.

Common problems:
• Not site specific
• Not signed
• No baseline risk assessment
• No appointments
• No method statements

A safety file must match the project.
Otherwise it will fail an audit.

Many contractors think inspections happen randomly.

They don’t.
Most sites get stopped because of:
• No safety file
• No fall protection
• No appointments
• No risk assessment
• No induction records

If your paperwork is not ready, your project can stop immediately.
Make sure your site is compliant before the inspector arrives.

Do You Have a Safety Appointment Matrix in Place?

A Safety Appointment Matrix is your roadmap to compliance. It clearly shows who is appointed for which legal duty, when the appointment expires, and what training supports that role. Without it, gaps appear—and gaps lead to risk.

A proper matrix helps you to:
• Track all mandatory appointments at a glance
• Avoid expired or missing designations
• Plan training and succession
• Prove compliance during inspections or audits
• Ensure responsibilities are understood on site

When an incident happens, you need to demonstrate clear, current accountability—not confusion over who was responsible.
Let us help you build or review your Safety Appointment Matrix so your system is always audit-ready.

Workplace fatalities often happen because of something as simple as a blind spot.
Forklifts and lifting vehicles are essential on site, but without proper training, supervision, and safety procedures, they can become deadly.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act requires employers to provide safe systems of work, and operators must be trained and competent at all times.

Is your business compliant?

🚨 OHS QUIZ – WHAT WENT WRONG?

A worker is performing work at height and ends up hanging from a roof beam after losing control.

He is wearing PPE, but something clearly failed.

According to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, which legal requirements were ignored?

Which of the following should have been in place?

A) Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment
B) Fall Protection Plan
C) Proper supervision
D) Safe working procedure for working at heights
E) Approved fall protection equipment
F) Training & competency
G) All of the above

⚖️ OHS LAW REFERENCES (South Africa)

Possible violations:

1. OHS Act Section 8 – General duties of employer
Employer must provide a safe working environment and safe systems of work.

2. Construction Regulations 2014 – Regulation 10 (Fall Protection)
A fall protection plan must be in place when working at height.

3. Construction Regulations – Regulation 9 (Risk Assessment)
Hazard identification and risk assessment must be done before work starts.

4. OHS Act Section 13 – Training
Employees must be properly instructed and trained.

5. OHS Act Section 14 – Employee duties
Employees must follow safe procedures and use equipment correctly.

6. General Safety Regulations – PPE
Suitable and maintained protective equipment must be provided.

⚠️ Possible Consequences
If an inspector saw this situation, possible outcomes:
Prohibition notice (work stopped)
Improvement notice
Fines
Criminal charges against employer / supervisor
Compensation claim
Injury or fatality
Company liability under COIDA

Safety failures don’t happen in one moment —
they happen when the system fails.

Not sure if your site would pass an inspection?
Safe Working Practice helps you stay compliant, audit-ready, and protected.

Too often, incidents happen not because rules don’t exist,
but because rules are ignored.

This video shows a simple example — a worker using a ladder incorrectly and nearly falling.

General Safety Regulation 13A requires ladders to be stable, secured, and used safely.
Section 8 of the OHS Act places the responsibility on the employer to provide a safe working environment.

But safety is a shared responsibility.

Supervision, training, and enforcement make the difference between compliance and accidents.

Ask yourself:
If an inspector arrived today, would your site pass?
