It has been an extremely wet and bitterly cold winter with our mountains frequently blanketed in snow. Spring has not yet sprung and the vines are strangely still mostly dormant. However our 2024 Sauvignon Blanc has been bottled and is ready for sales. We are so happy that the taste and quality is on par, if not better, than our sold out 2023 vintage. Roll on summer!!
We have also bottled the 2023 Syrah. We decided on calling it Syrah and not Shiraz because the style is much lighter, similar to the Northern Rhone style Syrah’s. It has a silky-smooth texture with vibrant fruit flavours… simply an easy drinking red. Meanwhile the 2024 Shiraz , our whole bunch “experiment” is aging in barrels and is giving some interesting results. Full bodied and dark red in colour with a hint of mocha and boiled sweets, and with much lower tannins than expected from the whole bunch pressing. Reminiscent of the 2020 Wheatlands Shiraz!
So this year we decided to get a Tim Atkins rating on our wines mainly because we have had a number of export enquiries from the UK. For those that don’t know Tim Atkins he is the UK based global wine Guru whose reports and ratings on global wines, are held in extremely high regard. Proud to say we achieved 89 points for the Wheatlands Shiraz, 88 points on the 2022 SMG and 87 points on our Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Yes all bronze medals but to say the least we are simply chuffed to get this recognition in Tim’s prestigious report where 2 259 wines were tasted and rated.
