The Circus Act of a Female Entrepreneur: Balancing Work, Life, and Self-Care Without Losing Your Mind:
Is it just me or are you feeling like it’s been a bit of a p**p fest for the last 6 months? In the wild, unpredictable jungle of entrepreneurship, being a woman adds a unique set of challenges that could make even the most seasoned ringmaster drop their hat. Picture this: juggling flaming torches (your startup), spinning plates (family, friends, relationships, actually anything that is non work related), and occasionally dodging the odd clown (I think we all know one ). Now, let's dive into this three-ring circus and uncover how to maintain your sanity while finding some semblance of peace because, quite honestly, this is more a cathartic process for me to remind myself.
Ring One: The Startup Safari
Welcome to the land where dreams are big, and funding is elusive. The typical startup landscape is a treacherous terrain where female entrepreneurs are often armed with innovative ideas but face a scarcity of investors who see their vision. It’s like trying to convince a lion to become a vegetarian—it can be done, but it takes some serious persuasion and ,maybe, a few braai (BBQ) seasoned tofu chops.
Challenge: Balancing the quest for funding with the actual work of building your business.
Solution: Embrace your inner multitasking magician. Schedule investor meetings back-to-back with product development sessions. Sign up for funding company newsletters that remind you when a date for submission is coming up. Networking is great, but if you are like me and get ‘people tired’, it can be rather stressful to do continuously. I need to recharge for a few hours and cocoon for a while. I can not stress enough how leaning into your mentor or ‘person’ to give constructive feedback and have honest conversations helps give realistic perspective. And remember, a well-placed cat video during a pitch can do wonders for breaking the ice (who doesn’t love toe beans!).
Ring Two: The Funhouse
At home, the fun never stops. You're the CEO, but also the head chef, chief laundry officer, and general maintenance gatekeeper, throw in lawn inspector for logs and lols. Balancing these roles without turning into a zombie requires the agility of a trapeze artist and the fearlessness of a flamethrowers assistant.
Challenge: Switching from boss mode to human mode in 0.5 seconds without losing your cool.
Solution: Implement a "magic cape" system. When you're in work mode, wear a stylish blazer and a splash of red lipstick. When it's down time, switch to a superhero cape (or a cozy loungewear—your call). The physical change can help signal to your brain (and your family/friends/room mates/pets) that roles have shifted. Plus, who doesn't love a good cape? I personally have a white one that makes me feel like a princess, we can all have our fantasy moments, right? Besides, it gives off Gandalf super power vibes.
Ring Three: The Self-Care Sideshow
Amidst the chaos, finding time for yourself can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack while riding a unicycle. Yet, it's crucial to avoid burnout and maintain your mental health.
Challenge: Carving out "me time" without feeling like you're shirking responsibilities or feeling guilty that you are making time for yourself.
Solution: Schedule in self-care moments wherever you can. Your brain breaks, yes they’re vital, become mini retreats while you “ground” yourself in the garden or a mini concert, listening to a bit of death metal, whatever works. And if all else fails, lock yourself in the bathroom for twenty minutes of peace, and shower. I quite literally have to make sure it is part of my schedule. Move your body, whether it be a good stretch or a quick yoga session at home, not everyone has time to go to gym but getting the blood flowing definitely helps with endorphin production. My personal favourite for “me time” is to lie on the bed staring at the ceiling while my mascara stained tears drip onto our fresh laundry, like I said whatever works. Ok that was not all true, I love getting out with the dogs to walk in nature.
The Grand Finale: Finding Peace in the Pandemonium
In this circus of entrepreneurship, remember that perfection is overrated, and laughter is your secret weapon, throw your head back and laugh from your stomach, loudly. Embrace the chaos, but don't let it define you. Here are a few final tips for staying sane:
1. Delegate Like a Ringmaster: You can't do it all. If you can afford to hire a great team, well done you, if not, lean on your support network, and share tasks to free up your time. Lists are also my best friend at the moment.
2. Set Boundaries: Work time is work time, and personal time is personal time. Set clear boundaries and stick to them. It's okay to say no.
3. Celebrate Small Wins: Every victory, no matter how small, is a step forward. Celebrate them with gusto—preferably with a glass of non-alcoholic sparkling wine from CazCan. (Shameless plug, but hey, business is business.)
4. Laugh Often: Find humour in the absurdities of your day. Whether it's your dog having a tantrum during a conference call or food stuck in your teeth in a Zoom call, laughter lightens the load. Also, find a good therapist so you can laugh together.
So, fellow ringmasters, keep your balance, keep your wits, and keep your humour. Remember, the circus wouldn't be the same without a few thrills and spills along the way. And who knows? You might just find that peace, and a well-deserved round of applause, are closer than you think.
Sincerely,
Caz ❤
P.S. when I am feeling slightly unhinged, I listen to P!nk Funhouse or Running Up That Hill, by Kate Bush, it really helps, promise.
