Appreciation post

621 TONNES. And every kilogram started with someone choosing to do the right thing. 💚

Today we just want to say thank you.

Looking back over the past three years, the support Electronic Cemetery has received from our community, businesses, schools, organisations, municipalities and individuals is pretty incredible.

From 2 September 2023 to today, you have trusted us with:

3,805 drop-offs
♻️ 171,211.4 kg of e-waste

2,160 collections
♻️ 449,877.9 kg of e-waste

That is 5,965 separate drop-offs and collections, representing an incredible:

621,089.3 kg — more than 621 tonnes of e-waste.

Some people arrived with a handful of old cables or a single laptop. Others called us to collect tonnes at a time. Every single one mattered.

Behind these numbers are thousands of decisions to recycle responsibly rather than throw electronic waste away. They represent resources recovered, hazardous materials managed correctly, equipment given a second life where possible, and a lot less e-waste heading where it shouldn't.

To every person who has dropped something off, booked a collection, hosted one of our receptacles, recommended us, supported our campaigns or trusted us with your organisation's e-waste:

Hello Eco Warriors!

Our annual International E-Waste Day Challenge is back for 2026!

Over the past two years, participating schools, businesses and organisations have helped divert more than 23.5 tonnes of e-waste from landfill in our International E-Waste Day Challenge:

2024: 12,078.3 kg total collected in the challenge.
Winner: Hillcrest Primary School

2025: 11,489.1 kg total collected in the challenge.
Winner: eThekwini Municipality Transport Authority

Last year’s winning team chose to donate their R20,000 prize as refurbished IT equipment to Lakehaven Child and Youth Care Centre, turning a recycling challenge into something that created a real community benefit.

Now we want to make 2026 International E-Waste Day a success as well!

Simply register your organisation, collect as much unwanted electronic and electrical waste as possible, and we’ll record every kilogram toward your total.

First Prize: R20,000

The winning organisation can choose between a R20,000 prize or refurbished IT equipment to the same value, either for themselves or for a charity or organisation of their choice.

2nd & 3rd Place: Eco Reward Vouchers

Second and third place will receive Eco Reward Vouchers to the value of their final collection weights.

These vouchers can be redeemed for quality refurbished IT equipment from our sister company, Refurb SA, helping turn the value recovered from old electronics back into useful technology.

Challenge closes: 12 October 2026
Winner announced: 14 October 2026

Participation is free, and multiple collections can be arranged throughout the challenge.

Computers, laptops, phones, printers, cables, appliances and many other electrical and electronic items can be collected.

So clear out those storerooms, rally your staff, learners, parents and communities, and let’s see what we can achieve together this year.

Responsible e-waste disposal is now more accessible in Durban.

eWASA, in partnership with Electronic Cemetery, has launched a new e-waste drop-off point at Mount Edgecombe Estate. Accessible collection infrastructure helps communities dispose of unwanted electronics responsibly, improves collection rates and diverts e-waste from landfill.

We have a problem with technology. And almost nobody is talking about it.

We have never owned more electronics.

More phones.
More laptops.
More servers.
More screens.
More printers.
More devices in our homes, schools and businesses.

And every few years, we replace them.

But where does all that technology go?

That is the uncomfortable question.

Because e-waste is now one of the fastest-growing waste streams on the planet — and the consequences don't disappear just because we put an old computer in a cupboard or throw a broken appliance away.

At Electronic Cemetery, we believe e-waste deserves far more than a skip, a landfill or an informal solution.

It deserves a proper end-of-life process.

A process that protects data.

Recovers valuable materials.

Keeps hazardous components out of the environment.

Creates employment.

Supports the circular economy.

And gives businesses accountability for what happens to their technology after they are finished with it.

That is why we don't see ourselves as “just a recycling company.”

Meet Natalie Nash, Managing Director of Electronic Cemetery E-Waste Management & Refurb SA.

For more than a decade, Natalie has helped build a business that protects the environment while creating jobs, educating communities and demonstrating the value within discarded electronics.

Her role spans client relationships, marketing, logistics and project coordination, but supporting her team remains central to her work. One of her most rewarding achievements has been watching team members grow into passionate, capable people who care deeply about their impact.

Natalie believes the sector needs more women who bring fresh ideas, creative thinking and strong leadership.

Her advice to young women is simple: “Never underestimate the value of your ideas. There is space for you to make a real impact.”
