Income tax return filing dates
Here are the dates and criteria for the 2023 Filing Season:

Individual taxpayers (non-provisional): 7 July 2023 @ 20:00 to 23 October 2023
Provisional taxpayers: 7 July 2023 @ 20:00 to 24 January 2024
What are the changes this year?
SARS has made the following updates for the upcoming Personal Income Tax (PIT) Filing Season:

Aligning the 40 Business Days Rule to the Filing Season End Date

Last year, when the rule was first introduced, those in the auto-assessment population were granted 40 business days from the issue date of the auto-assessment to revise their return if they needed to amend their auto-assessment.

This year, we are extending the 40 business days to coincide with the normal filing due date for non-provisional taxpayers, which is 23 October 2023. This will give those in the auto-assessment population more time to file a return if they wish to edit their auto-assessments.

MINISTER of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu has warned young people to use their R350 Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD grant) wisely by starting their own businesses.

Zulu said this while addressing young people during a Youth Small, Micro, Medium Enterprises event organised by Lulwazi Lwethu in Lusaka in Nyanga, Cape Town on Saturday, 24 June.

Zulu said as a former minister of small, micro and medium enterprises she wanted to urge young people build their own businesses and not rely on grants.

She said although young people were getting the R350 grant, the future of such a grant was uncertain. She said the government was only obligated to ensure sustainable grants for the elderly, people living with disabilities and children.

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is now turning to artificial intelligence and data collection on a mass scale to automatically ensure tax compliance – approaching third parties, including financial institutions and employers, say legal experts from Leap Group.

SARS is also currently working on automating tax return submissions for all taxpayers in the country, the group added.

“This means that more taxpayers may be eligible for auto-assessments, which are already in place for taxpayers who only receive income from sources where taxes were already withheld, and IRP5s and similar documents are available to SARS.”
