Ekurhuleni Stands in Grief
Over the past two months, nine women aged 20 to 38 have been found dead across Kempton Park and surrounding Ekurhuleni areas, prompting police to place the area under lockdown and launch a full-scale manhunt. Among the identified victims is 38-year-old Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, who disappeared while out jogging.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has confirmed a specialist team is investigating possible links between the cases, with Operation Shanela expanded and a R400,000 reward offered for information. It is still too early to confirm whether the killings are connected, and police have urged the public to avoid speculation.
This tragedy lands against a backdrop South Africans know too well: gender-based violence was declared a national disaster in November 2025.
At WeDo Services, we extend our deepest sympathy to the families affected and to a community in mourning.
If you or someone you know needs support, the Gender-Based Violence Command Centre is available 24/7 on 0800 428 428.
