Record Label Contracts: What Upcoming Artists Should Look Out For

A record label contract is a business agreement, not a favor.
Before signing anything, understand what you are giving and what you are getting.

First, ownership.
Check who owns the masters. If the label owns them, they control your music long term.

Second, money.
Advances are not free money. They are loans that must be paid back from your royalties.

Third, contract length.
Look at how many years or albums the deal lasts. Long contracts can lock you in early.

Fourth, creative control.
Know who decides your sound, image, and release schedule.

Fifth, royalty split.
Understand how much you earn per stream or sale and when you get paid.

Sixth, exit clauses.
Know how and when you can leave the deal if things go wrong.

Never rush to sign because of excitement.
Read everything, ask questions, and get legal advice.

A bad deal can slow your career.
A good deal should help you grow.
