Scotland’s first phone-free school, Portobello High School in Edinburgh, has introduced a bold new policy where pupils are required to place their mobile phones into lockable magnetic pouches upon arrival.
These pouches stay locked throughout the school day and can only be opened at special stations when school ends. The aim is to reduce distractions, improve focus, and promote healthier social interactions among students.
This initiative has received strong backing from parents, with around 86% supporting the move. It reflects a growing trend in schools prioritizing mental well-being and classroom engagement over screen time.
