Ward 88 Stakeholder Reset: Strengthening the Framework for Community Engagement 🚀 ✨

At Mackenzieville Community Hall, we facilitated a Ward 88 Stakeholder Reset Meeting, convened together with Chung Fung Metal (CFM).

The engagement brought together SMMEs, NGOs, civic organisations and community representatives for a structured and constructive dialogue aimed at resetting the stakeholder engagement framework in the ward. The discussion focused on restoring transparency, clarifying participation processes, and establishing how stakeholder engagement will function going forward.

This meeting marks the start of a two-week structured consultation process, which will lead to the formation of a Technical Working Group that fairly represents all key stakeholders and provides a clear platform for ongoing coordination.

Appreciation to our facilitators Maggie Madidimetse and David Morema for guiding the dialogue and helping ensure an inclusive and constructive engagement process.

In complex community environments, meaningful progress is built on clear processes, inclusive representation, and accountability. This reset lays the groundwork for strengthening those principles from the outset.

Thank you to all stakeholders who participated in the engagement. The important work of the consultation process now continues.

💧 Driving Change Through Meaningful Engagement – Mayfield Ext. 45 Water & Sewer Project

For the Mayfield Ext. 45 Water and Sewer Connection Project in the City of Ekurhuleni, our social facilitation team built strong partnerships between the project’s technical experts and the community, creating the trust and understanding needed for lasting impact.

Our role encompassed:
Crafting and executing a tailored community engagement and communication plan, ensuring all voices were heard and respected.
Managing the Community Liaison Officer (CLO) appointment, induction, and oversight, strengthening local representation and accountability.
Facilitating temporary relocations for affected households with cultural sensitivity and logistical precision, ensuring minimal disruption to lives and livelihoods.

Hosting and coordinating multi-stakeholder meetings with contractors, councillors, and community members to resolve disputes, align priorities, and keep progress on track.

Providing transparent progress tracking and risk reporting, enabling early intervention and problem-solving.
This approach created an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect, allowing the contractor to deliver effectively while the community saw their priorities reflected in the outcomes.

Building on these lessons, we see even greater potential to enhance impact through Kuhle Engagement Solutions Online (KESO). With KESO, projects benefit from:
• Real-time engagement tracking and data-driven decision-making tools.
• A secure, central hub for all project documents, evidence, and progress records.
• Faster resolution of issues through instant communication and escalation pathways.

By combining on-the-ground facilitation expertise with cutting-edge digital engagement tools, we ensure that projects are not just built, they are embraced, sustained, and celebrated by the communities they serve.

From Project Sites to System Shifts – Reflections from the IHSP-SA 5th Masterclass

David Morema had the honour of presenting at the 5th Institute of Human Settlements Practitioners – South Africa (IHSP-SA) Masterclass under the theme “Entrepreneurship and Human Settlements.” Hosted at the University of Mpumalanga, the event brought together brilliant minds from government, academia, private practice, and grassroots organizations, all committed to shaping the future of human settlements.
In his session, he explored:

✅ The business of Social Facilitation – Moving beyond a tick-box exercise to a strategic tool for real impact.
✅ The rise and role of Community Resource Organizations (CROs) – Powerful grassroots partners ready to formalize, collaborate, and co-create inclusive solutions.
✅ The KESO Platform – A tech-driven ecosystem revolutionizing community engagement with real-time visibility, data, and accountability.
✅ The Kuhle Academy – Not just training facilitators, but equipping and deploying them into practice, bridging the gap between policy and community reality.

The key message:
If we want trust, scale, and sustainability in housing delivery, then participation is not optional, it’s a business opportunity. One that demands innovation, policy alignment, local legitimacy, and a whole-of-society approach.

We’re building momentum through platforms like KESO and forging partnerships that recognize the transformative power of CROs. The future of human settlements depends on bold ideas, collective action, and engagement that truly delivers impact.

A Groundbreaking Step Toward Climate-Resilient Informal Settlements

At Kuhle Solutions, we believe that every challenge presents an opportunity for transformation. Today, we are proud to share yet another milestone in our journey of impact—the completion of a comprehensive study on integrating climate adaptation and resilience into the upgrading of informal settlements in South Africa.

With 69% of South Africans living in urban areas—a number projected to rise to 80% by 2050—the demand for sustainable, resilient human settlements has never been more urgent. 2.3 million households currently reside in over 4,297 informal settlements, many of which are located in high-risk floodplains, wetlands, and low-lying areas, making them particularly vulnerable to flooding, heatwaves, fires, and droughts.

This study, covering Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Free State, assessed:
✔️ Climate risks and vulnerabilities in informal settlements
✔️ Gaps in existing policies and planning frameworks
✔️ Barriers to implementation and community-driven solutions
✔️ Recommendations for policy, private sector investment, and financing models

Key highlights include:
🌍 A Climate Resilience Framework tailored for informal settlement upgrading
⚖️ Policy reforms such as integrating climate risk assessments into urban planning tools like SPLUMA and the National Housing Code
🛠️ Community-driven adaptation models, such as flood early warning systems and fire safety initiatives
đź’ˇ Leveraging indigenous knowledge and innovative green infrastructure solutions

This research aligns with South Africa’s National Climate Change Act, the Paris Agreement, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 11 & 13), ensuring that informal settlement upgrading is not just about housing—but about building resilient, future-proof communities.

This achievement would not have been possible without the collective efforts of policymakers, urban planners, community representatives, private sector partners, and non-governmental organizations.

A special thank you to everyone who contributed to this milestone. As Kuhle Solutions, we are committed to driving innovation in climate adaptation, human settlements development, and stakeholder engagement—one impactful project at a time.

Let’s continue the conversation! What are your thoughts on integrating climate resilience into informal settlement upgrading?

Kuhle Solutions recently facilitated a two-day public participation engagement in Matadi, DRC, for the Inga Dam project, led by our Director, David Morema. We brought together civil society, NGOs, government representatives, traditional leaders, and local communities to ensure everyone had a platform to voice their concerns and shape the project. Using the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) approach, we ensured public participation was inclusive and respectful of community rights. At Kuhle Solutions, we are committed to transparent, equitable processes that align technical goals with community needs for sustainable development.🌍🌍
